People Like Us Trailer: Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pine Are Secretly Related

Elizabeth Banks is popping up everywhere this year, most recently as Capitol employee Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games, but she's out of the wig and crazy clothes for People Like Us. In the dramedy, she plays Frankie, a bartender with a young son who's struggling to get by. Meanwhile, Chris Pine plays Sam, a slick businessman who's massively in debt, and when his father dies, he gets his hands on $150,000 of his dad's cash — only it's not for him, it's for Frankie, whom he learns is the sister he never knew he had. When it's up to him to deliver the money, he doesn't tell her who he is at first, but still finds himself bonding with Frankie and his nephew.

Even though Banks is becoming ubiquitous, I still like seeing her explore different roles, and I'm curious to see how she and Pine are as onscreen siblings. Pine just recently won me over in the romantic comedy This Means War, but he obviously has a bigger dramatic challenge here as Sam. The movie looks a little schmaltzy with its unconventional family-bonding theme, but with a stellar cast that also includes Michelle Pfeiffer and Olivia Wilde, I'm definitely interested. The movie comes out June 29, but you can watch the trailer after the jump.

Chris Pine was spotted by his trailer on the LA set of Welcome to People yesterday. The actor's back to work on another film project after spending the last couple months of 2010 shooting This Means War with Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy. His new project will feature leading ladies Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, and Michelle Pfeiffer. The project was written by Alex Kurtzman, whom Chris knows from back when they made Star Trek together.

Elizabeth Banks Gets Welcomed to People

Jack Donaghy's baby mama is about to get more dramatic than usual.

Jack Donaghy's baby mama is about to get more dramatic than usual. Elizabeth Banks is in talks to star in Welcome to People, which is the directorial debut of Alex Kurtzman, the screenwriter of Star Trek and Transformers. The film is about a man (to be played by Chris Pine) whose father dies and leaves it up to him to bring his sister a cut of the will. Here's the twist: the guy didn't even know he had a sister, so he gets involved in her life without revealing their connection. Banks will play the sister, an alcoholic mother of an angry teen son. Banks has been sinking her teeth into meatier roles lately (later this month she'll appear in The Next Three Days), but has yet to convince me that she's better suited for drama than comedy. Which side of her do you prefer?
