Rob Schneider Talks About His Wife as the Real-Life Inspiration For New Sitcom Rob

Saturday Night Live alum and frequent Adam Sandler collaborator Rob Schneider is coming to TV with his own series, Rob.

Saturday Night Live alum and frequent Adam Sandler collaborator Rob Schneider is coming to TV with his own series, Rob. The CBS show's title isn't the only thing that's inspired by Schneider: the premise of the midseason show, about the newlywed relationship between Rob and his Mexican-American spouse (played by Claudia Bassols) and her family, is based on Schneider's own relationship with his wife. Schneider hit the Winter TCA along with showrunners and other stars like Cheech Marin to talk about the love story behind the show.

  • Schneider, whose wife Patricia is from Mexico City, said their home life has inspired the show. "It's like a sitcom at our house," he said, because his wife is so funny, and since her first language is Spanish, there's often humor found in that. She's prone to saying things like "in Spanish I'm much funnier, you have no idea," and "translator off!" meaning she's not going to listen to him anymore at certain times of night.
  • Schneider recounted his love story with Patricia, highlighting their mutual ethnicities as a factor. "My dad's German," he explained, "they're not touchy feely," but "Mexicans kiss you when you see them and when you leave." He called it a beautiful thing, and when he first met his wife (he was a guest on a show in Mexico that she was producing), and she kissed him to greet him. He said he then begged her to go out with him for weeks, and finally she accepted, flying from Mexico to LA with her mother to meet.
  • Costar Bassols, who plays Rob's wife on the show, said that she has met Schneider's wife Patricia, but has not taken notes for her performance. "She has that something special that's impossible to imitate," Bassols said, and gushed about how sweet Schneider's relationship with his wife is. "Every time Rob talks about his wife, his face lights up," she said, adding that "their love story inspires this whole story." When she was done, Schneider softly said thank you to her. All together now: Awww.

Grown Ups: Still Has Some Maturing to Do

Adam Sandler has made a career out of playing juvenile men.

Adam Sandler has made a career out of playing juvenile men. In Grown Ups, he may be older and wiser, but he's still the same old guy who laughs at fart jokes.

Sandler recruits his closest friends for this slapstick version of The Big Chill. Kevin James is the overweight one, David Spade is the lothario, Rob Schneider is the hippie-dippy guy, and Chris Rock is the somewhat effeminate member of the bunch. Indeed, Rock's casting is the only somewhat surprising thing about this movie that's chock-full of pratfalls, hot girls in short-shorts, and never-ending barbs. The boys love to make fun of each other, but unfortunately, their swipes are the meat of this movie. To hear more of what I mean, read more

Movie Preview: Adam Sandler and Chris Rock in Grown Ups

I've been watching over the past several months as the cast roster for Grown Ups continued to add more of Adam Sandler's previous SNL colleagues and close friends — Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, Colin Quinn. It's like he decided to make a project where he could invite everyone he knows to jump on board and have fun. And the cast really does appear to be having a good time in the trailer — I'm just not 100 percent sure I'm right there with them.

The film follows Sandler and his childhood friends (Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade) as they reunite one Fourth of July weekend to honor the death of their basketball coach. Sounds kinda like The Big Chill, but as to be expected with a Happy Madison film, it's ridiculously slapstick. I love all of these guys, but the bits in this teaser definitely aren't as roll-on-the-floor funny as I had hoped with such a star-studded cast. (Really, a breast-milk joke?!) But maybe I'm just judging it too quickly. The film opens in June, but take a peek at the video and tell me your thoughts when you read more

What Would Be Your Comedy Dream Team?

No, no — this lineup here is definitely not my comedy dream team.

No, no — this lineup here is definitely not my comedy dream team. It is, however, the main cast of a new, untitled project written by Adam Sandler. Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider will join Sandler in a comedy which follows "five best friends from high school who reunite 30 years later on a Fourth of July weekend."

This is a fierce lineup and these guys' powers combined will probably result in a pretty funny movie. It reminds me of the news of Will Ferrell and Sasha Baron Cohen teaming up for their comedic take on the Sherlock Holmes story — a great pairing that shakes up the comedic teams a little bit (John C. Reilly is funny with Ferrell, but variety is nice, too). If you could line up a bunch of comedic actors for a film, who would you pick? If I limit it to five, I think I'd go with something like this: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Rock, Isla Fisher, Anna Faris and Donald Faison (I can't help it, he always makes me laugh on Scrubs!). Your turn: Who's on your dream team?

Adam Sandler Is a Man For All Generations

Adam Sandler went with one of his standard super casual outfits for the premiere of You Don't Mess With the Zohan in LA last night, but he still had plenty of pretty ladies to pose with on the red carpet.

Adam Sandler went with one of his standard super casual outfits for the premiere of You Don't Mess With the Zohan in LA last night, but he still had plenty of pretty ladies to pose with on the red carpet. His co-star Emmanuelle looked gorgeous as usual, while his wife Jackie showed off her already growing baby bump. This has been a big week for Adam between confirming his baby news and promotional tour, and it's about to get even sweeter —on Sunday he'll receive the MTV Generation Award at the Movie Awards! We are already gearing up for the big event, and now we're excited to have a funny acceptance speech to look forward to.

Lots of other photos including Anna Faris, David Hasselhoff, and David Spade if you just read more

Lindsay Lohan

Rob Schneider As Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan's newest movie I Know Who Killed Me hits theaters today but due to her recent DUI "snafu," she was unable to make her scheduled Leno appearance earlier this week to promote the film.

Lindsay Lohan's newest movie I Know Who Killed Me hits theaters today but due to her recent DUI "snafu," she was unable to make her scheduled Leno appearance earlier this week to promote the film. Lucky for her, Rob Schneider came to the rescue. He not only volunteered to talk about the movie for her, but as her. And I must say, he did a darn good job. I definitely did a doubletake.
