Mary-Kate and Ashley Talk Hobo Chic, Their Social Circle, and Olsen Power

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Interview on Fashion

Mary-Kate Olsen teamed up with actress Catherine Keener last night for a party for Style Wars, a documentary about hip-hop and street art that was released in 1983. It was an evening of fashionable shoulder rubbing for Mary-Kate, who also spent time with New York Rangers player Sean Avery. Ashley Olsen skipped out on the dinner, but she was spotted in the city this morning heading to a meeting. Both Mary-Kate and Ashley have been busy doing press for their various collections and new online shopping venture StyleMint, and recently spoke about the massive time commitment maintaining their style empire requires. Mary-Kate and Ashley touched on their "hobo-chic" period, their wide group of friends, and the power of the Olsen brand. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen told Style.com:

  • Ashley on their long hours: "I don’t think it’s the creative process that has ever gotten to us. More than anything, it’s about trying to find balance with work and how we can personally stay balanced while having our corporations grow, and I think that’s been the biggest thing that we are constantly aware of. We have to put boundaries on scheduling. We work crazy hours every week, so it’s been more about figuring out when we need to put our foot down. “We can’t add this extra meeting. It’s one too many meetings in a day; push it later.” So it’s been about that. And with The Row, it’s about how to elevate the process with growth without putting too much on the overhead."
  • Mary-Kate on the Olsen brand: "All over the world I think people know us from different stages of our life and different things, whether it’s videos or Walmart or as designers or acting. . . I think it’s remarkable that children know us now from things that we did 20 years ago, when we were little guys."
  • Mary-Kate on her "hobo-chic" period: "For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow?"
  • Ashley on hanging out with other designers: "I mean, honestly, I don’t leave my house. . . . I’m friendly with a lot of people, but when it comes down to it, you won’t see me actually in that [scene] . . . our closest friends are in all types of fields. My best friend is in law school, the other one’s a Pilates instructor, the other one’s a yoga teacher, the other one works in production, real estate, an entrepreneur."

Your Thoughts on Being Fired For Anti-Gay-Marriage Statements

When hockey player Sean Avery took part in a pro-gay-marriage PSA, a TV sports host sided with some intolerant anti-gay-marriage tweets likening gay marriage to bestiality and ended up losing his job.

When hockey player Sean Avery took part in a pro-gay-marriage PSA, a TV sports host sided with some intolerant anti-gay-marriage tweets likening gay marriage to bestiality and ended up losing his job. You all sounded off in comments and on Facebook with your opinions, and I thought you made some great points. Here are your thoughts on the debacle.

  • "This isn't really political. The statements made were slanderous and hateful — likening gay sex to bestiality." — April
  • "I am 100% pro gay marriage, and I am all for this guy being fired, but it's for publicly making the remarks. If he had an anti-gay marriage view but shut up about it and still been fired then that would have been different." — miriah15
  • "As long as they're not using company funds or implying that their views represent their employer's views, then why does it matter?" — Sara
  • "He's in a different situation as an employee — he wasn't just commenting in a chat at the office, but making public statements on Twitter. He's an on-air sport commentator, and many if not all companies have policies regarding public pronouncements on political issues. Perhaps if he had just said 'I support traditional marriage' and not expressed agreement with tweets equating gay marriage to bestiality, he'd still have a job." — stephley
  • "I also support gay marriage and equal rights. And I agree, making these comments publicly is probably what got him fired. However, had he come out in support of gay marriage publicly, would he have been fired? Would there be more outrage by people if he got fired for being for gay marriage?" — Anonymous
  • "Everyone is just way too politically correct nowadays. I'm an aspiring singer/actress. I also happen to be politically conservative. Not an easy mix. I try to keep it low profile, at least until I get to know someone, but my Facebook page is fair game. Every liberal performer I know can put all sorts of political messages on their profile with no fear of retribution. It's only fair for that right to extend to me. Still, I worry that some casting director will see it after I audition for them and not hire me based on it. It's not right that I should even have to worry about that. I feel it's the same in this situation." — Kimberly

Should an Employee Be Fired For Gay-Marriage Stance?

Even if Americans may be more open-minded about issues like gay marriage, we probably don't consider professional male athletes the most high-profile group of supporters.

Even if Americans may be more open-minded about issues like gay marriage, we probably don't consider professional male athletes the most high-profile group of supporters. So it was a big deal when Sean Avery, a New York Rangers hockey player, announced his support for gay marriage in a PSA for New Yorkers for Marriage Equality (becoming the first pro athlete to publicly support the organization). But what's really gaining attention is the Twitter aftermath to Sean's PSA that has resulted in a Canadian TV sports host being fired.

It began with father and son sports agents Don and Todd Reynolds tweeting that same-sex marriage is always wrong and likening a man marrying another man to bestiality. Most members of the professional hockey community were quick to say they disagree with these comments, except for Rogers Sportsnet host Damian Goddard, who tweeted his support for the anti-gay-marriage tweets and then was fired from the Canadian sports show. Even though the network claims the firing wasn't sudden, it does seem a strange coincidence that it happened right after the debacle.

Whichever side you fall on in the gay-marriage debate, do you think it's right for a company to fire an employee based on his or her stance on hot-button political topics? Or is it more about making intolerant public remarks?

Watch the PSA that started it all after the jump.

Burberry Brings Rain, A New Skyline Addition to New York

>> New York Mayor Bloomberg declared yesterday "Burberry Day," in honor of the lighting of the brand's logo atop its new US headquarters — watch a video of it going down here — and the weather complied with rain, appropriate for a brand known for their trench coats. "I was worried about the drizzle before, but now I love it," said Christopher Bailey, in town to celebrate. "It's all very English."

Christopher arrived to the unveiling last night with Lily Donaldson on his arm, who grinned and gushed about being "a Burberry girl" and "part of the [Burberry] family."  He went on to explain what an honor it it is to have the Burberry logo lit in the first place: "It's one of only six grandfathered buildings in New York where you can do that, so it's a big deal for us to be able to affect the iconic Manhattan skyline, which I love."

The excitement seems to have made him chatty — he covered a range of topics, from admitting that he dyed his hair blue once to discussing advertising fees — like Mario Testino's, which runs $140,000 a day: "You’re buying talent. And I think talent never goes away with the changing economy, and talent is something we all need to keep nurturing."

Models (Hilary Rhoda, Helena Christensen) mingled with editors (Kate Lanphear, who apparently has dyed her hair black underneath, Amy Astley, Cecilia Dean) and it girls (Byrdie Bell, Alexa Chung, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Harley Viera-Newton), and the mix left at least one girl confiding that she didn't recognize Blake Lively — Lily Donaldson, who admitted: "I don't watch Gossip Girl. But you can't blame me. I don't even own a TV at the moment!"

The celebration seemed a success, except for skimping in one area.  An alcohol shortage kicked in around 9:30 pm, leaving one guest unhappy: "That's the driest party I've ever been to."  Same goes for Harley, Leigh Lezark, and Derek Blasberg, The Cut tweeted: "The party has run out of glasses, and the trio is displeased."

He's working with New Line Cinema to bring his experiences in the fashion world — and at Vogue — to the big screen.  It's even a romcom, just like The Devil Wears Prada was — maybe they'll bring Anne Hathaway back to be "Sean"'s love interest, how like totally cute would that be? >> Although Gap is having a little trouble these days —the brand just cut their entire European design team and were overtaken by Zara as the world's biggest retailer — all bets are still on executive VP of design Patrick Robinson, whose first full Gap collection debuts this Fall. It is he who chose the likes of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Georgina Chapman, Cecilia Dean, and Scott Schuman to front Gap's Fall 2008 campaign, proving he really is trying to bring fashion back to the company.

Can Mikael Jansson's shots of those four, Ryan McGinley, Karlie Kloss, Sean Avery, Jourdan Dunn, and more, plus Patrick's new designs, make the difference for Gap?  Only time will tell, but until then, enjoy the rest of the Fall campaign.
