Javier Bardem Is More Than Just a Tomato in the Market

Javier Bardem mugged for the camera with the help of a paintbrush for a photo shoot in the Fall 2008 Men's Fashion Issue of T Magazine. Almost one year after his award-winning role in No Country For Old Men, Javier is still one of Hollywood's hottest, even though he's admittedly too lazy to do more than one or two movies a year. In the article, he talks about his latest film and how his life has changed over the last year and reveals a few things you never knew about him. Here are highlights:

  • On changing things up after No Country For Old Men: "This is the first time in 20 years that I’m playing a leading man in a romantic comedy. It was a conscious decision: in my early career I waited for more complex roles to come, knowing that they might not ever come. The complexity of Chigurh was a kind of dream — the Coen brothers are my favorite directors of all time. On that movie, I was the only foreigner. And Chigurh really comes out of nowhere, which helped with the character, but it was a little isolating. In Vicky Cristina, I’m with these three beauties. I was afraid no one in the audience would believe they’d ever be with me. I was in the makeup trailer saying, 'You better work a miracle.'"
  • On loving movies: "I don’t believe in God, but I believe in Al Pacino. The other day I was watching Dog Day Afternoon again, and I see a man who is so true, so interesting and I understand more about the world from his performance. And you go, 'C’mon, it’s only acting.' Well, wouldn’t you say that a good book or a good painting allows you to see the world in a different way? When I see a great performance, I feel more alive."
  • On his career: "As a kid, I felt happy onstage, but beforehand I would think, What am I doing here? I should be in the playground with my friends. I’m the same today: we actors are lazy. I like to take a year off between films. Some actors need to work for the money, but money is not a priority for me. I don’t have the need for a lot of cars or houses. Since I am a tomato in the market, I have a price. They have to pay the price, but money is not my biggest priority."

Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams Is Coming Back to a Screen Near You

It feels like forever since the last time Rachel McAdams was promoting a movie, but now she's back on the scene to gear up for her new film The Lucky Ones.

It feels like forever since the last time Rachel McAdams was promoting a movie, but now she's back on the scene to gear up for her new film The Lucky Ones. We won't be able to catch her acting skills until Sept. 26, but how fabulous does she look in this vampy photo shoot for T magazine? We got a peek at the cover earlier in the week, but here are highlights from the interview where she talks career, kisses, and why her personal life is so sacred. Here are highlights:

  • On becoming an actress: "When you live in a small town in the middle of Ontario, it would have been too big of a dream to say that you want to go to Hollywood. But, secretly, I think I always knew. When I was young, I was a figure skater, and every year there was an ice carnival. I lived for the carnival. That's when the actress in me first came out. I loved the costumes and the sparkles. One year, I got to play Marilyn Monroe on ice. I danced to 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend.' I wore a long blond wig and a red dress with sequins. It was heavenly."
  • On working at McDonald's: "I had a small-town life — I worked at the local McDonald's for three years. I'm not sure why they kept me: I am something of a daydreamer and a dawdler, so they would only let me be the 'friendly voice' that greeted you when you entered the restaurant. I was slow — I would be organizing the sweet-and-sour packets in the customer's takeout bag while the line snaked out the door. Even at a fast-food restaurant, I wanted everything just so."
  • On kissing scenes: "They're strange. A kiss with anyone, on or off camera, can be intimidating. I've been kissing for nearly two decades now, and I'm always convinced I'm not doing it right. Chemistry is so important in a great kiss. You can act your way through anything, but it's hard with a kiss. It's much better if there's an attraction."

In the News: Meet Philippe Starck

T magazine, an online publication covering women's and men's fashion, design, food, and travel put out by the New York Times, currently has a fun profile of Philippe Starck, featuring a video of the prolific designer as well as a collage with the tagline, "From underwear to mega-yachts, Philippe Starck knows no boundaries."

The video itself is a collage of sorts, showcasing his designs, which do run the spectrum from toothbrushes to hotel interiors, as well as his quirky character. If you've yet to "meet" Starck, T's interactive format is fitting for the playful French designer. The collage is much like one you'd see in a print magazine, but scrolls north, south, east, and west with your mouse, revealing more of Starck's designs, photos of him, captions, and brief editorial portraits — "his design dna," "his eco mania," and "his colorful character." Enchanté Monsieur Starck!

Natalie Portman Has No Problem Dying

Natalie Portman's photoshoots have been high on the cute factor lately, posing with puppies and riding around on bikes.

Natalie Portman's photoshoots have been high on the cute factor lately, posing with puppies and riding around on bikes. They fit right in with the theme of her new movie Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, but this Sunday's The New York Times Style Magazine showcases a different side of the star. Natalie has always seemed like one of Hollywood's more mature young stars, and this article and photoshoot are no exception. Here are highlights:

  • On growing up:
"I was once told that the age you are is the age you were when you became who you are. Does that mean I am perpetually 11? I'm not sure I want to have that strict an image. In the movie business, there is such a temptation to stick with a particular persona. There is a kind of artistic branding."
  • On shaving her head:
"Being bald was great, but the regrowth was the problem. My hair is very curly, and I'd have to have someone iron it if I wanted it to be straight. There was a lot of head-burning. And I started craving hair. I wanted to feel like a girl again."
  • On death scenes:
"I've died many times. I died in Closer, but they changed the ending and, miraculously, I lived. I also died in Star Wars and in Cold Mountain. Death scenes are not more difficult than other scenes. It's much harder to laugh than cry. I find it so hard to fake laughing. I have no laugh except my own, and that laugh is very particular, very modern. It's hard to make any other laugh sound real. It's like sneezing: you really only have one sneeze."

Natalie always comes across as wise beyond her years, even if she is only eleven at heart. Do you like these more serious photos of Natalie, or do you prefer her more fun-loving side?

Natalie also sat down with the newspaper for a video interview to talk about her childhood, her favorite sounds and her happiest times. To watch it just read more
