The Descendants

George Clooney stars in this Oscar-winning film as a father who learns his wife has been cheating on him after a boating accident leaves her in a life-threatening coma. Along with his two daughters, he sets out to discover the identity of the man his wife was seeing, while also trying to make a decision to sell his family's Hawaiian property. Clooney turns in yet another masterful performance, while Shailene Woodley has a breakout role as his teenage daughter. The DVD includes deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes extras, and interviews with Clooney and director Alexander Payne.

My Week With Marilyn

This dreamy story is told through the lens of Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), a production assistant who quickly falls for Marilyn Monroe while working with her on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl in London. Michelle Williams plays the insecure yet mesmerizing icon, who's constantly seeking support and validation from the various men in her life. The film is not a biopic, yet Williams's Oscar-nominated performance and incredible physical transformation make it a dazzling glimpse into Monroe's personal life. DVD extras include commentary with director Simon Curtis and the featurette "The Untold Story of an American Icon."

If a Parisian- or baseball-themed party don't sound like your thing, then watch the Academy Awards on a tropical island with George Clooney . . . well, sort of. Host a Hawaiian-themed evening in honor of The Descendants, to which everyone wears floral shirts. Present the ladies with flowers to put in their hair and mai tais to sip as they walk into a room filled with hula music and the sounds of the ocean. Serve dishes that bring together island flavors and colors.

How to Throw a Descendants-Themed Oscar Party

We're inching steadily closer to the Oscars, which means it's time to start planning for the big night!

We're inching steadily closer to the Oscars, which means it's time to start planning for the big night! If you're going to tune in, why not invite over a few friends and host a festive bash? If you're pulling for George Clooney, best picture nominee The Descendants is a perfect place to draw some inspiration, especially if you're one to dream of tropical climates. Here are a few tips for planning your luau, and don't forget to fill out a ballot with your Oscar picks for a chance to win an iPad.

  • How to decorate: Hawaii plays a huge role in the film, so go all out! Lots of flowers (real or fake) in splashy colors will punch up your place, and fake palm trees will add a nice touch. If you want to go the extra mile, set up an indoor kiddie pool and float lilies and candles on it. For additional seating, use beach chairs or even towels.
  • How to dress: Clooney's character Matt dresses almost exclusively in silly Hawaiian shirts, so those are a must (the uglier, the better). His daughter Alex (Shailene Woodley) spends most of her time in a bikini, which you can cover up with jean shorts and a button-down. If it's too cold for Summer clothes in your neck of the woods, a lei should suffice.
  • What to serve: Pretty-colored cocktails with umbrellas (think daiquiris, Mai Tais, and pi·ña coladas). If you want to go full throttle, a suckling pig would show your commitment to the theme, or you can go with a pineapple upside-down cake.

In news that will surprise no one, Breaking Dawn Part 1 easily won the top spot at the box office with $139.5 million. The huge sum just barely missed out on making it the biggest Twilight opening ever; that honor still belongs to New Moon, which made $142.7 million in 2009. Breaking Dawn Part 1's opening is still impressive; it's the second-biggest opening weekend in the vampire series, and the fifth biggest opening of all time.

Way back in second place was new release Happy Feet 2 with $22 million, followed by last week's box office winner Immortals with $12.3 million. Adam Sandler's comedy Jack and Jill came in fourth with $12 million, and animated hit Puss in Boots completed the top five with $10.7 million. In limited release, George Clooney's drama The Descendants debuted in 10th with $1.2 million.
