Box Office: Wonderland Is Still the Top Attraction

Alice in Wonderland continues to cast its spell on the box office.

Alice in Wonderland continues to cast its spell on the box office. The Tim Burton spectacle earned $34.5 million, besting the weekend's newcomers. Of those, children's flick Diary of a Wimpy Kid pulled off a narrow upset over the heavily promoted Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler starrer The Bounty Hunter. Kid took the second place spot with $21.8 million, while the latter garnered $21 million for third.

Despite a disappointing number of only $6.1 million, the bloody Jude Law thriller Repo Men squeezed its way into No. 4. Returning rom-com She's Out of My League finished out the top five with $6 million.

Kristen Stewart fans may be a bit disappointed over the figures for The Runaways. The film took in $803K from its small release of 244 theaters for a per theater average of $3,291 — not terrible, but not good either. It's still slated to go nationwide come April, so here's hoping it manages to pick up some steam.

In this second installment of speaking with The Runaways costume designer, Carol Beadle, we get down and dirty about what separated Joan and Cherie's (Kristen and Dakota's) styles and the key pieces of the time. Then, Carol and I got into an interesting conversation about always-evolving hemlines, and Bowie is referenced yet again. The film comes out today; are you going to see it? I kinda want to just to revel in all the rockin' clothes and Dakota's Sasson jeans . . .

What would you say are the style differences between Kristen and Dakota’s characters? How would you describe each of their styles and how are they different?

The obvious difference is one is more feminine and one is less, one is really trying to be put forth this style that’s very masculine, mainly to prove that she can play her instrument as well as the boys, which is really the main thing. You had to really prove yourself. And it was pretty punk, so you couldn’t just get up there and bang the sh*t out of a bunch of chords. You had to really prove that you were worthy of being up there and that this was your main focus; to not be girlie and taken super seriously. I think Cherie (Dakota's character) was less into the music. Cherie was more into the style and having been such a massive Bowie fan — he was not only an amazing musician, but his style was what really caught you. I think the difference is that she’s definitely more feminine, but also raw, too. Not like Brady Bunch feminine, but like still pretty raw. Feminine rock and roll, that would be the main difference — more colorful, more glammy.

Joan Jett, Michael Shannon, and Floria Sigismondi Talk Runaways, Rocking, and Kristen

I've already gotten to tell you what I think about rock biopic The Runaways, with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, but now it's time to hear from the stars and the others behind the scenes of the movie.

I've already gotten to tell you what I think about rock biopic The Runaways, with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, but now it's time to hear from the stars and the others behind the scenes of the movie. Pop chatted up Kristen Stewart on the red carpet in NYC, but we also have some choice words from its inspiration Joan Jett, costar Michael Shannon, and director Floria Sigismondi.

  • Joan Jett on the message of the film: Ultimately, to follow your dreams. That good old cliché of following your dreams, because I really feel that people beat down other people’s dreams constantly. I see it a lot with writers, when I talk to them about this. I guess a lot of writers must be told, "You’ll never make money that way, get a real job!" A lot of writers want to write . . . To me, I just think it’s really important to try and follow your dream. And if for some reason life takes you a different way, then at least you made an attempt.
  • Joan on first meeting Kristen: I met her last New Year’s Eve. She came up to see a gig and I kind of just dumped on her about The Runaways for several hours and asked her if she was going to cut her hair. She said yes, and I had great faith that she was going to be able to pull this off because she seemed very dedicated and genuine and authentic. We had a few weeks before filming started to spend some time, and she picked my brain.

Would You Buy a Hanging Chair?

I spotted this chair in photos from the new Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning flick The Runaways, out today, about Joan Jett's 1970s all-girl rock band.

I spotted this chair in photos from the new Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning flick The Runaways, out today, about Joan Jett's 1970s all-girl rock band. The set designer really nailed this one on the head, seeing as hanging chairs were in their heyday in the '70s — especially after Eero Aarnio debuted his iconic Bubble Chair in 1968. The chair looks fab here with its corduroy cushions and that groovy labyrinthian wallpaper. But I fear a hanging chair would look too dated out of context. What do you say? Would you buy one?
