The Google Movie vs. the Facebook Movie: How They Stack Up

In The Internship, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson try to get jobs at Google, and the movie gives us a good look at the inner workings of the tech giant. Of course, it's not the first time Hollywood has explored a huge Silicon Valley company — in 2010, The Social Network gave us a peek at how Facebook was (controversially) started. They have more in common, including an actor, but how else do the films stack up? We've broken it down below.

The Internship is a comedy, and The Social Network is a drama.
The tone is an obvious difference; The Internship is a straightforward comedy, while The Social Network is heavy on the drama. Intellectual property lawsuits are so serious! Not that it doesn't have its laughs — remember that bit with Eduardo (Andrew Garfield) and the chicken?

Max Minghella is in both movies.
In The Social Network, Minghella plays Divya Narendra, the partner of the Winklevoss twins who sues Mark Zuckerberg. In The Internship, he's also the nemesis of the main characters. As Graham, he's a fellow intern determined to beat Billy and Nick (Vaughn's and Wilson's characters) to a Google job. His part is bigger in The Internship and, honestly, sexier: he gets to use his British accent. Long live the tech company villain!

The Social Network is inspired by true events.
The Social Network's veracity may be disputed by some, but it is based on real people and events. The Internship is a work of fiction, and while there is an internship program at Google, I doubt very much that real interns have to play a game of Quidditch as a challenge, as Billy and Nick have to do. But the brainteaser question they're asked in their interview? That's one of Google's old hiring practices, which is actually banned now.

We get to go inside Google, but not Facebook.
Both Facebook and Google have a college-like atmosphere, but only The Internship goes deep inside Google. And it is a lot of Google: its campus grounds, driver-less cars, nap pods, slides, free food, the works. You get a pretty good idea of the office culture, but in The Social Network, we only see an early version of the Facebook office.

Buzz Lines: What's Your Favorite Quote From The Social Network?

Though The Social Network came out less than two years ago, more than a handful of the Aaron Sorkin-penned quotes have already secured their place in quotable movie history. I'm still asking my friends if they know what's cool ("a billion dollars") and telling them to drop the "the" from whatever project they're working on. Do I have your full attention? Check out the quotes below and let me know what your favorite lines are from the movie.

  • "If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook." — Mark Zuckerberg
  • "A million dollars isn't cool. You know what's cool?" — Sean Parker
  • "We can do that ourselves. I'm 6'5", 220, and there's two of me." — Tyler Winklevoss

5 Perks of Dating a Geek

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg married longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan last night in a surprise ceremony in his backyard.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg married longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan last night in a surprise ceremony in his backyard. Priscilla, who just finished med school last week, has been dating Mark for almost a decade, after they met at Harvard. The Social Network makes the case that computer nerd Mark created Facebook to help him get chicks. But if all women knew that dating a technology lover comes with so many perks, they wouldn't need to be convinced. And in reality, Mark and Priscilla have been together since before he released "The Facebook." Here are five reasons to seek out a geeky guy.

  1. They're genuine: There's a good chance a geek has spent more time playing video games than practicing his game. And if he's used to being the dating underdog, he'll likely appreciate having you in his life.
  2. They set up your electronics: Can't get your WiFi to work? Dream of an awesome entertainment setup but frightened by cords? Find a guy that looks at setting up electronics as a form of entertainment itself.
  3. They fix your computers: Your time spent waiting in line at the Genius Bar or on the phone with technical support will drop drastically. And if they can't fix it, they know someone who can.
  4. They expand your knowledge: If you think of the Internet as a series of tubes, spending time with a computer nerd can make technology seem like less of a mystery. And if they have a thing for nonfiction books, they'll probably share what they've learned.
  5. They can find anything on the Internet: Geeks can call on their superior online research skills when you're planning a vacation or looking for a new restaurant for date night. How romantic!

Anything to add, geek lovers?

As host Anne Hathaway said, this year's Academy Awards kind of were the "young and hip" Oscars. They made the effort, anyway, from the choice of hosts to skits like the auto-tuned movie montage. Making a joke about how musicals were big this year, Franco introduced the parody, which features 2010 movies like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I, The Social Network, and Eclipse. Watch as Justin Timberlake's "billion dollars" speech and Taylor Lautner's abs become fodder for hilarious lyrics!

The Social Network's Aaron Sorkin Says "My Hat's Off to Mark Zuckerberg" in Oscars Press Room

Aaron Sorkin has been picking up accolades throughout award season for his adapted screenplay for The Social Network, and he completed his run with an Oscar win tonight.
Picture and Quotes From Aaron Sorkin About Mark Zuckerberg in 2011 Oscars Press Room 2011-02-27 20:07:29

Aaron Sorkin has been picking up accolades throughout award season for his adapted screenplay for The Social Network, and he completed his run with an Oscar win tonight. Back in the press room, the screenwriter talked about his next project, the power of the Internet, and why he has to give proper credit to Mark Zuckerberg.

  • On the talented, young cast of The Social Network: I'll try to sum it up this way. Like a lot of people I grew up watching The Graduate and I always wondered what it must have been like for Buck Henry to see Dustin Hoffman just do it for the first time, with no rehearsal. I don't wonder anymore. I know exactly how he felt. I see Jesse doing it. I see Andrew doing it. Justin, Armie, and this cast do it under the guidance of David Fincher. It was an incredibly talented and very, very young cast. This material isn't for beginners. These were the youngest characters I've ever written. We had to find exceptional actors and we found them all and got the best performances out of them. It wasn't just the performances. It was everything.
  • On what's up next: I'll be very candid with you. Since the movie came out and got the kind of critical reaction and cultural reaction that it's gotten, I've been hyper aware that the thing I do next is going to be "the thing I did after The Social Network." I'm going to spend tonight enjoying this and tomorrow starting something new. I think that's what I have to do. I'm just going to keep writing. Keep doing what I've always been doing. Try to find something that I like. Something that I think my friends will like and my father would like and keep my fingers crossed.
  • On Mark Zuckerberg: I think he's been an awfully good sport about this film. I don't think that there is anybody here who would want a movie made about things they did when they were 19 years old. And if that movie absolutely, positively had to be made, you'd want it to be made only from your point of view. And you wouldn't want included the point of view of people suing you for hundreds of millions of dollars and have a visceral, emotional reaction to you. That is the movie that we made. And then with things like Mark's appearance on SNL, the fact that he took his staff out to see the movie the day it came out in the US on Oct. 1, and, however it might be related, his $100 million gift to the New Jersey school system. That was met with some cynicism in the press, but I'm sure that the kids, and their parents, and the teachers in Newark aren't worried about how the money got there. So my hat's off to him.
  • On his relationship with The King's Speech writer David Seidler: I'm proud to say I've got a bromance going with him. I think that his screenplay for The King's Speech is remarkable. It started when I asked around and got his email address after I saw the movie because I had to write and tell him how much I loved it. I'd never met him before or had any interaction with him. He emailed back and we began emailing each other every few days.
  • On the influence of social media: Listen, I've written a lot and talked a little bit about being wary about the Internet. Somewhere along the way I've become my grandmother. You saw what happened in Cairo and there are other examples of social networking tools mobilizing people for great causes like that. Again, we have to thank the Mark Zuckerbergs that are out there.

Want to throw an Oscar soiree this weekend? As we inch closer to the show on Sunday, we'll be featuring different ideas for your viewing party planning, using the best picture nominees as inspiration. First up: The Social Network.

Your Facebook-loving friends will obviously get a kick out of seeing you pay tribute to the award season front-runner, but if you're wondering how to start, try out these ideas. Then don't forget to download your own Oscar ballot to pass around to your guests! You can also fill out our online ballot for the chance to win a Samsung HDTV.

  • Who to invite: Start a Facebook group to announce the evening's festivities and invite your Facebook friends — all 520 of them.
  • Dress code: No need to break out your Oscar best for this shindig. Make like Mark Zuckerberg and have everyone don their oldest sweatshirt with sweatpants or jeans and some Adidas flip-flops. Bathrobes over pajamas are equally OK.
  • Table setting: Make the table look like a workspace area, and get creative! You can serve candy in your office organizers where you normally store paper clips and pencils, and label each seat with a personal business card. You can even take Zuckerberg's own card slogan "I'm CEO, bitch" and swap in each guest's name.
