The Town

Ben Affleck kept his The Town promotional tour going last night with his latest premiere in Dublin following a morning of interviews. He joined costar Rebecca Hall for a screening Sunday in London, and she was once again by his side to show off their finished product. Ben spoke on the red carpet about how much his movie's domestic success means to him, saying, "If it hadn't turned out well, I'd be lying to you and telling you this kind of thing didn't matter but it feels really nice. I've been around long enough and seen the highs and lows to really enjoy this." Ben's sure to be thrilled, then, to hear that Oscar prospects for his second directorial effort are apparently rising fast back in Hollywood.

All hail new movies! My picks for this week, The Town, and Easy A both earned top marks at the box office over the weekend, taking in $23.8 million and $18.2 million respectively. The number three spot also went to a debuting film, Devil, which garnered $12.5 million.

Last week's champ, Resident Evil: Afterlife sunk to fourth with $10.1 million. New animated flick Alpha and Omega rounded out the top five with $9.2 million.

Ben Affleck, the star and director of this week's new movie The Town, is near and dear to my heart. A personal heartthrob since his Good Will Hunting days, Affleck has had his career ups and downs, but currently I think he's riding high, as he's proving himself as a capable auteur of heavyweight dramas. So in his honor, I'd love to direct you to one of his very first highs. 12 year-old Affleck plays host for The Voyage of the Mimi, an educational PBS series. Note the amazing bowl cut and sweet, eager-to-please demeanor. Watch and try not to squeal too much, will you?

In his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone, Ben Affleck gives us a grisly look at Boston's underbelly through the eyes of a detective trying to track down a missing child. He brings us back to his hometown for his second turn behind the camera, but this time we see the story from the other side. In The Town, Affleck plays a thief who's ready to throw in the towel on his life of crime.

Doug's decision to go straight is sparked by a bank robbery gone wrong. In a moment of panic, his right-hand man and best friend James (Jeremy Renner) takes bank manager Claire (Rebecca Hall) hostage when the team flees the scene. After they set her free, Jimmy fears that Claire will remember something and report it to the FBI. Doug promises to take care of the situation himself, but quickly finds himself in hot water when he starts a relationship with Claire. The romance represents hope for a new life, but turning his back on his roots proves to be more complicated than he expected.
