Karl Lagerfeld Disses Audrey Tautou, Praises Keira Knightley

Karl Lagerfeld is no wallflower when it comes to speaking his mind.

Karl Lagerfeld is no wallflower when it comes to speaking his mind. But of all the things he has said as of late, this might be the most awkward. During a recent interview with Telegraph, the designer not-so-subtly shared his disdain of former Chanel No. 5 face, Audrey Tautou. More specifically, he didn't like Tautou's portrayal of Coco Chanel in the 2009 film Coco Before Chanel.

"Oh, the movie was bad," he said. "She played it like women's lib, like Simone de Beauvoir 30 years before The Second Sex. No, no, no, no."

But Lagerfeld did provide a glowing review of Keira Knightley in her role as Coco in his new short film, Once Upon a Time: "Chanel was a different kind of woman. Keira had it. She is a young woman in love, not a spinster."

He also had only good things to say about Knightley as a real-life newlywed. "She had the least pretentious wedding ever. The whole thing was relaxed. I think it's perfect. After all they lived together for quite a time. It's not as if she is a young girl of 18 who sees the husband for the first time. She is not a country girl."

If that wasn't enough Lagerfeld candor for one sitting, he also had something to say about those who use Facebook and Twitter. "They lose a lot of time, these people, and they become stupid because they nearly tell you they're going to the bathroom, eh?"

Aside from maybe the bangs, Sienna Miller's look from last night's annual Theatre World Awards is essentially a reprise of a 2009 look the actress wore while promoting G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The common denominators? One great Isabel Marant dress from the Fall 2009 collection and a similar styling M.O. In both cases, the actress added ankle boots to complete the snake-print dress, a testament to her cool-girl signature style — and a lesson that there's nothing wrong with wearing the dresses already in our closets.

The second look, which she wore to a Gillette Venus appearance in Times Square, was of the daintier kind: a yellow, lace knee-length Reem Acra number with classic black pumps. In his first interview since his 2011 dismissal from Dior — which also happens to be his first-ever sober interview, too — John Galliano spoke with Vanity Fair about the addiction that consumed him, the anti-Semitic remarks he made in a Paris cafe, and the road to recovery in the two years since his firing. The exclusive interview, which also pulls from a range of sources, including Galliano's friends Kate Moss and Oscar de la Renta, as well as members of the Jewish community, will be available in full in the July 2013 issue, but until then, a few highlights below.

On his anti-Semitic outburst: "It's the worst thing I have said in my life, but I didn't mean it. . . . I have been trying to find out why that anger was directed at this race. I now realize I was so f*cking angry and so discontent with myself that I just said the most spiteful thing I could."

On his excessive drinking and drug use: "I was going to end up in a mental asylum or six feet under."

On his first phone call in rehab: [Galliano called Bill Gaytten, who stepped in as creative director of the John Galliano label.] "Bill said, 'Do you realize what you've f*cking done?' and I said 'Kind of.' But I still didn't. I couldn't say yes. I just couldn't. And those were the last words we shared. That's someone I've known for 30 years. Even now I'm still learning every day how many people I hurt."

On the last two years: "It sounds a bit bizarre, but I am so grateful for what did happen. I have learned so much about myself. I have rediscovered that little boy who had the hunger to create, which I think I had lost. I am alive."
