Gangster Squad

There's plenty of eye candy in this neo-noir gangster film set in Los Angeles circa the 1940s and '50s. Josh Brolin plays an honest cop in a corrupt world. He rounds up a group (including a sweet cop played by Ryan Gosling) to try to clean up the city and attempt to take down mafia boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). Some of the performances and action sequences border on cartoonish, but the film is worth seeing if not just for Gosling's chemistry with love interest Emma Stone. The DVD includes director's commentary, deleted scenes, and making-of featurettes.

The Impossible

Naomi Watts earned an Oscar nod for her performance in The Impossible, which chronicles a family's harrowing experience with the 2004 tsunami in Thailand. The movie showcases strong acting from both Watts and Ewan McGregor, who plays her husband, as well as the three boys who play their sons, but it's not easy to watch, and you're likely to be in tears by the end. The DVD comes with director commentary, as well as deleted scenes and a casting featurette.

Matt Damon linked up with his Promised Land costar John Krasinski and director Gus Van Sant for the Berlin Film Festival premiere of their movie. The snow didn't stop the trio, who were together earlier today for a press conference and photocall, from signing autographs for fans and posing for pictures — Matt even captured a few snaps on his own phone! It's been a fun few days overseas for Matt after he met up with pal George Clooney on Wednesday. Matt and George grabbed dinner with friends as they gear up to get started on their new project. The duo are working together on Monuments Men, which is expected to start filming next month.

Promised Land: Damon and Krasinski Are Captivating Competitors

The environmental battle over natural gas drilling may not seem like the material that crowd-pleasing movies are built on, but Promised Land overcomes its potentially bland fracking setup to be a genuinely entertaining movie.

The environmental battle over natural gas drilling may not seem like the material that crowd-pleasing movies are built on, but Promised Land overcomes its potentially bland fracking setup to be a genuinely entertaining movie. In fact, this movie isn't really about fracking as much as it is the moral dilemma faced by its main character, portrayed by Matt Damon. He and John Krasinski square off in the Gus Van Sant-directed film as combating forces on either side of the fracking debate. They handily influence a small town (and the audience), though both campaigns are as compelling as they are dubious.

Damon plays Steve Butler, a slick but likable salesman, with familiar ease. He represents Global, a megacorporate natural-gas company that buys the drilling rights to citizens' land. Steve's got one last town (the fictional McKinley) to win over with his partner Sue (Frances McDormand, a pleasure to watch, as always) before he's promoted up the corporate ranks. They think they've got it in the bag until Dustin (Krasinski), an environmentalist with some bold claims about the detrimental effects of fracking and a whole lot of photos of dead cows, comes into town. Watching the tug of war that ensues to win the favor of the small population gets a little tedious, but the competitive dynamic between Steve and Dustin is one of the strengths of the film. John Krasinski is one of the stars of drama Promised Land — which he also cowrote with costar Matt Damon. When I sat down with Krasinski to talk about working with Damon, he admitted to being in awe of the actor since he wrote one of his all-time favorite films, Good Will Hunting. Krasinski also talked about what it's been like to wrap up the final season of The Office, how he's feeling about saying goodbye to the show, and which former costars he'd like to see come back.

I recently sat down with the actor to talk about their collaboration — and how it stacks up to working with his other famous collaborator, Ben Affleck. Damon discussed the film and why it's so relevant right now, and he also talked a little bit about another upcoming project, Behind the Candelabra, where he stars opposite Michael Douglas as Liberace's lover. Watch the interview to hear his cheeky joke about just how much he's showing of himself onscreen.

Matt and Luciana Celebrate Promised Land With Their Oldest Daughter

Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana, hit the red carpet last night in NYC for the premiere of his new movie Promised Land.

Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana, hit the red carpet last night in NYC for the premiere of his new movie Promised Land. He wrote, produced, and stars in the movie alongside collaborator John Krasinski, who posed for photos without his own spouse, Emily Blunt, who's been in England making All You Need Is Kill with Tom Cruise. Emily's sister Felicity Blunt was able to attend, though, with her husband, Stanley Tucci. Matt and John also celebrated the upcoming movie with costars Rosemarie DeWitt and her husband, Ron Livingston. On the carpet, John spoke about his strong friendship with Matt. He said, "I would love to have a bromance with him, but I don't even know if I could even use the word 'bromance' because he and Ben [Affleck] are so tight and like a married couple that I'll never get in there."

Matt and John said a few words before the screening, along with director Gus Van Sant. Gus said the premiere screening was "momentous" while Matt declared that there's "a little piece of our soul in this." Afterward, the gang retired to an afterparty at Loi. Matt and Luciana holed up in a banquette for a bit, along with their oldest daughter, Alexia. John, likewise, was surrounded by family to celebrate his big project.

Matt Damon and John Krasinski were together yesterday to chat up their new movie, Promised Land, at a special screening organized by Variety at NYC's Chelsea Clearview Cinemas. Promised Land arrives in theaters Dec. 28, in limited release, but Matt and John are getting their promotional push out of the way ahead of the holidays with interviews and press events scheduled for this week. Matt and John collaborated on the script and both star in the movie, which is based on a story of a salesman who tries to secure land for natural gas companies to extract gas through fracking. It's just one of many collaborations Matt has lined up with his friends. He and old friend Ben Affleck are reportedly working on another film about the Boston gangster Whitey Bulger.
