Are No-Airbrush Issues Pointless If the Models Are Perfect?

Are No-Airbrush Issues Pointless If the Models Are Perfect?

Today May's Marie Claire came out, showing a makeup- and airbrushed-free Jessica Simpson. She looks like a totally different person, but quite beautiful nonetheless. Maybe even more beautiful than she often looks completely done up! France's Marie Claire had the same idea for its April issue; except it only says airbrush-free and not makeup-free. The result? Women who look like they'd need makeup just to look bad.

Still makeup won't hide cellulite, and these women show no signs of that. While it's a relief to know models can at least go without the brush, it does make me question the point of airbrush-free photo shoots. Is it to show that not every woman needs it, or that beautiful and flawless need not be synonymous.

I don't think the models looking good as-is defeats the purpose of having non-airbrushed photos. While I know magazines usually retouch every photo, I've never fooled myself into thinking that I would look like Gisele with a little photoshopping. I think by not air brushing, they're just trying to a make the statement that not every minor "flaw" needs to be corrected in order for a photo to look good.

You know, the more I think about this, the more I like it. Women don't need airbrushing and make-up to be beautiful... it's about time that idea hit the mainstream! I guess that means it's okay for me to go out on dates plain-faced like I always do, right?

agree with skigurl. they're models, of course they're near-perfect, it's their job!

they all look great, but to be fair, they are models for their JOB...obviously they are gorgeous and skinnyi think the main difference in these pictures versus an airbrushed picture is that you can see the leg "fat" when they bend their knee...i am sure usually that is toned right down...but it's not even FAT it's just skin...it's 100% normal to have it, and would be weird not to have iti don't think it's pointless...i still like to look at these photos and appreciate the art of it

Great photographers do make all the difference... I think the point is, it needs to start somewhere.

Yeah that almost makes me feel worse to know these women are naturally gorgeous! I like thinking it is partially because of the airbrushing, lol. I know, ignorance is bliss, but still!

Anyone can look good with the right make-up, lighting, and photographer. There's still an entire team of people behind these photos. To advertise 'no airbrushing' is really just a gimmick to get people to check out the magazine.

Makeup and airbrushing alone do not create the illusion of perfection and beauty. People assume that photographs are completely accurate, objective representations of what the model(s) look like, at least until they're opened in Photoshop and airbrushed. But there are so many other ways to manipulate photographs. The photographer (or art director or whomever) makes many choices about a variety of factors--lighting, angle, framing, focus, etc, any of which can and will affect the appearance of the final product. That second image of Jessica Simpson has very soft lighting, which makes her appear very soft and romantic, makes her skin look like it's glowing. The photograph would look completely different if harsher lighting had been used. Makeup can't hide things like cellulite, but a good photographer can.
