10 Ways the Stimulus Is Green, Earthy

Remember when everyone cared about things being green and organic instead of cheap? Well if the stimulus works, the days of organic wine and roses may return. Here are 10 directions money is headed to ensure everything comes up green again.

  1. $6 billion for clean and safe water, creating more than 200,000 jobs
  2. $4.5 billion for greening federal buildings
  3. State energy grants to fund renewable-energy projects
  4. $2.5 billion for energy-efficiency and renewable-energy research and development
  5. More effective tax credits for home-efficiency upgrades
  6. $5 billion for the Weatherization Assistance Program, creating approximately 90,000 jobs
  7. $2 billion for advanced batteries
  8. $9.3 billion for intercity rail, including high-speed rail
  9. $27.5 billion for highways (though must also be used for fuel-efficient public transportation)
  10. Smaller projects: wildfire prevention, trail maintenance in National Parks, and EPA Superfund cleanup

Last year, we noticed a very strong chlorine taste to our water. After a couple weeks, of calling and asking if it was occuring everywhere, they finally sent someone out to test our water. Was there a problem? Absolutely! They told us that our water tested extremely high for chlorine and ammonia. That is not healthy drinking water, IMHO. I mean, ammonia and bleach make mustard gas, and I was drinking and bathing in the combination for 2 weeks. Also, Arlington's water was found to have traces of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Drink this or give it to your kids overtime, there will be affects.

Good for you hypno....since antibiotics will not get rid of a cold. :) Overuse of antibiotics and antibacterials just creates superbugs that are resistant to everything. And em, do your ABC's or sing Happy Birthday to yourself while scrubbing away with plain soap and hot water. It's not necessarily the type of soap you're using, but the scrubbing action itself.

I agree about antibiotics and antibacterials. I know a lot of people who run to antibiotics every time they get a cold and I strongly advise against that. By choice I haven't taken antibiotics with the exception of one serious bought with bronchitis. Our bodies need to engage these bacteria’s on their own terms so that that information/adaptation is passed along to our children. If we block that process we're all going to be even more susceptible.

sarah, I've also heard some pretty frightening things about the over-use of anti-bacterial soaps and what that is doing to our water systems from my immunology prof. Scary stuff.

There was a story on the news early this week about a town near coal mines, where the water comes out of the faucets grey and children have a variety of strange illnesses. Just because it hasn't affected me personally doesn't mean I don't care if it affects other people.

There have been Cryptosporidiosis outbreaks in the U.S. from recreational water sources just last year. I don't remember if any deaths resulted, but the fact that even heavily chlorinated water can't prevent the parasite from inhabiting our water is pretty frightening.

That's pretty ironic :) ...I actually thought you'd done that on purpose! And thanks for the info, hypno, I really didn't know. I've lived in Iowa, MI as a child and now KY, and I don't think we've ever had problems with unclean water.

Well look at the run off issues which caused the e coli contamination issues in Ca. Carrie Sue. The one that comes to mind is the when the Spinach crop was contaminated. Also with the advent of better and more frequent testing we've found that many of our drinking water tables are contaminated with pharmaceuticals which over time can effect the health of individuals.
