Al Gore Ties Myanmar Cyclone to Global Warming

Al Gore says that the cyclone in Myanmar is a result of global warming. He told NPR yesterday:

And as we’re talking today, Terry, the death count in Myanmar from the cyclone that hit there yesterday has been rising from 15,000 to way on up there to much higher numbers now being speculated. And last year a catastrophic storm from last fall hit Bangladesh. The year before, the strongest cyclone in more than 50 years hit China – and we’re seeing consequences that scientists have long predicted might be associated with continued global warming.

Gore said that because ocean temperatures are on the rise, extreme and dangerous weather is also on the rise.

Critics of Gore say he's taking advantage of the deaths of thousands of innocent people to promote his political advantage. But, if he truly believes that we must address climate change to stop such disasters and save future lives, doesn't he have an obligation to speak up? If he is wrong about global warming, what harm is there in taking better care of the planet anyways?

Is Gore right to tie Myanmar Cyclone deaths to global warming?

coldwater71.... I recycle... I think global warming pseudoscience is an excuse for more socialism. well, desertman, good for you. Every little bit helps. Also, you may have something there. I never looked at it that way before. Something for me to think about... I never thought that being green was a cover-up for more socialism. I just thought being green meant that a person cared about the future, about having a clean environment around them. However, I guess if a person DOESN'T care about the planet and the effect they have on it, and are FORCED to care by the people that already care, well, I guess maybe that very well could be socialism. but on your other post, "The two aren't related. Just because you find gluttony distasteful does not mean it is the cause of global warming..." I kinda have to disagree. I could easily find a glob of examples of "gluttony" (good word, BTW) indicative of global warming trends. SUV's for example. A car made to carry 6-8 people getting 11mpg and I rarely see more than one person ever in them. 5k sq ft mcMansions crackerboxed in on freshly clear cut old growth forests with only 1-2 people living in them is another good example. Cutting down massive acres of rainforest for cattle pasture... dumping commerical waste in the ocean, causing algae blooms, killing off the coral reefs & native fish b/c the companies can get away with it... lopping off mountain tops and converting untainted fields into sprawling landfills filled with garbage that could have been recycled... dredging miles and miles of fish nets in the ocean to catch anything and everything they can to make an extra buck... people dumping their old appliances in our lakes b/c they're too lazy to take it to the dump (or don't want to pay the dumping fees) Well, I don't know if gluttony is a good word to use for all those examples I gave... maybe we can come up with something better... but I believe that "gluttony" is not so much "distasteful" but more like "damaging" to the earth. I find a lot of things (actions) that people do to be distasteful, but not damaging. If it's distasteful, I keep my mouth shut & go on. But alas, when it is damaging & hurtful, I speak up. And I am smart enough to know the difference. Like sommielier calling me trashy for politely saying "only trash litters" to that litterbug woman, after picking up her cigarette pack... twice. Being Trashy is telling the woman how filthy she was, how redneck she looked, how disgusting her garbage filled car back window was, how her calvin pissing on a 3 bumper sticker is redneck... etc. I didn't say anything derrogatory about her distasteful appearance or her belongings, I only commented that she is trashing a public parking lot that all the other humans in our neighborhood visit and enjoy. And there is nothing wrong with that.

"people that scream there's no such thing as "man-encouraged" global warming just don't want to take any responsibility for their wasteful lives and don't want to take any effort to change anything about it." -- The two aren't related. Just because you find gluttony distasteful does not mean it is the cause of global warming... No matter how much you wish were the case.

great comment datalj12. Everyone I have had the pleasure of discussing this issue, in person, that is on the other side of the fence, (does not believe in global warming or that man has anything to do with it or that man cannot stop it) also has the same mentality that since they believe that man has nothing to do with global warming and if there is such a thing as global warming, we have no control over it, then I have found out that they absolutely refuse to recycle, conserve, etc. They justify their wasteful consumption and waste production by saying there is no such thing as global warming. Ok, I will go so far as to agree that there is so much conflicting data out there, it may be true, it may not... but where is the harm done if we are wrong and there is no such thing as man-encouraged global warming? where is there any harm done to take steps to conserve water and keep it clean? Where is there any negative impact that you can show me on cleaning up our towns, our streams and riverbeds, our country, our planet? I have found out that people that do not believe in global warming are very wasteful and conserve nothing. Two of my good friends are very blatent about it. I still love them as friends, but they are very adamant that since they do not "observe" global warming, (like it's a religious holiday or something) there is no reason they should do anything about it or change anything in their daily lifestyle. So I ask everyone that thinks Al Gore and his global warming message is a bunch of hooey and malarkey... Do any of you that don't believe it, do any of you recycle? Do any of you buy locally? Do you conserve energy? Do you conserve water? From interaction with others, I have come to the conclusion that if a person doesn't believe in global warming, it is an excuse to not change one's lifestyle. I'm not being snarky, I really am just asking everyone out there... So far I haven't found anyone that believes global warming is a complete farce and still recycles their trash.

I am also one of those people that feel we have seriously polluted the planet. The people that usually make the counter argument have a dream or own an SUV that gets 11 to the gallon, and drives to take the kids to the park. I hate to apply a blanket statement, but the fact that all 6 billion of us could not effect the health of the planet is living in a dream world. The presentation of Mr. Gore is right on target. It is going to be a process we are going to go through as the effects of global warming is more predominate. This will not happen over night, but we are starting to see the effects of it now. Katrina was only one of many things that will happen as the earth adjusted to the new realty.Hurricanes or cyclones are the earth's mechanism for exchanging areas of high heat to areas of low heat, for example the trade winds, which move cold air from the artic to the equator an vice versa for the warm air. As the earth heats up, there will be more areas that hot, and less areas that are cold. The only way the heat can disapate is to make the storms more severe. This what we have seen in the last ouple of years. There was comment made that storms have never hit in SE Asia? Yes they have, but not with amount of severity. They now more often flood the areas they hit, and we have seen small south pacific islands that were once high and dry now flooding. I know that I may not be here to see the full effects of global warming, but I know they are coming. I can say that the weather has become hotter in the northern areas and wetter in places that were not wet before, and hurricanes that were only occasionally severe are now more often severe. I think people that deny global warming are functioning with their heads in the sand, and they will live to regret it.

People are often unreasonable, illogical & self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness in your life, people will be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it still may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is all between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway. -- Mother Theresa ***yes, You all prolly see me as very rude and mean, when I say things to others, but it is only because I care about the innocents that the actions affect, and her words are my mantra. God has no problems with me being a voice for those who cannot speak out. (well, at least he hasn't cursed or smited me for it yet.) :)

scales, What's with the "what?" What? Oh and, Sommelier, yes, I am glad that hypnomix and I are congratulating each other on calling attention to a litterbug. We have about 7 Billboards up everywhere here in town saying "STOP LITTERING! TENNESEANS ARE SICK OF IT!" It's ridiculous. Trash is everywhere. (including the people) The time is over for social graciousness here in TN. You can keep being nice, but for me, I am over it. I don't want to live in a trash infested state or city or town or whatever. People have no right to throw their trash out when there is a trash recepticle 3 feet away. If it wasn't so bad, then why does the city have billboards up everywhere telling people to stop littering??? It's that bad! Besides the littering... Dirty child with no shoes or clothes on? I tell them straight out they need to put the crack pipe down and bathe their youngun' & put some clean clothes on it! (did it twice already in wal-mart.) Parents were buying 2 cases of beer and the poor toddler was in a nasty diaper, covered in caked-on filth. If they can spend 35.00 on beer, they can spend 4.00 on some baby wipes. And don't think I won't tell them so. That child is an innocent victim of neglect and laziness. Starving dog in the back yard with no food or water? I call the cops and animal control. Don't think I won't do it, that animal is an innocent victim of neglect and abuse. Throw your trash down in front of me? I am gonna pick it up, throw it away and call you trash to your face for littering. We're all victims of litterbugs. Have you ever seen a seal caught with one of those six-pack rings stuck around it's neck, growing into the skin? Welcome to my world. Things get done here without pussingfooting around... I am no longer afraid of hurting someone's feelings... Sommalier. I am over it when someone's negative actions hurt or affect the innocent. If you don't want to say anything to anyone, fine. mind your own business and keep picking up other's trash. As for me, If I see anyone littering, I will pick it up, twice if I have to, and call them trash. You should try it sometime.

Gore will use anything he thinks can help his little "pet cause". Unfortunately, people are starting to realize that the rhetoric he is spewing doesn't jive with the facts. It'll be a good day when he takes the long road home, and decides to stay in his multi-million dollar mansion, and leave the rest of us alone.

And Dave, I am American. I know that some people will not notice. In that particular situation, if you walked right up beside the drivers side of a car while it was occupied, it would be hard not to notice. I understand what you are saying though. I ebb and flow with my anger at the self-absorbed and extremist way of life that has taken over American society. The selfishness that oozes from the pores of most people you meet. But then something amazingly sweet, albeit simple will happen from one stranger to another and the needle leaves the red on my anger scale. We are still good people, we just all need to slow the hell down, have a glass of wine, and let each other be.

Sorry I'm late to the party. I've seen a lot of people criticize Gore and call him stupid, dumb, a moron, etc. This is very off base. While Gore isn't especially intelligent, he's not especially stupid either. I'd say that he's definitely above average intelligence, but also definitely not a genius. What Gore excells at is political manuvering and cunning. He's especially adept at deceiving people. Most politicians, and Gore definitely is a politician, lie. Most infulential politicians are very skilled liars, and Gore is definitely influential. But Gore has the skill of saying something that leads people to believe one thing, but when his words are examined in detail leaves an escape clause for him. Case in point in this article. Gore skillfully makes a statement that he knows most will equate with him saying that Global Warming definitely, 100%, no doubts about it causes Cyclones like the one that struck Burma. This is the message that he wants to convey. He wants it to come across as an indisputable scientific fact. And he does an admirable job of doing so. However if you look at his exact words, you see he can fall back on saying that that wasn't what he said. He only says that Global Warming might cause such catastrophic weather events. Not very moral or honest, but great politics. Gore would do well on Survivor. Gore was especially smart to pick Global Warming as his cause to gain power and wealth. It has several advantages. First the science is extremely immature. We really understand only a very small part of the climate and still have a long ways to go just to learn the number of things that we don't have an understanding on. This makes it very hard to disprove any theory that is good enough to get a few scientific papers published on it. There are a whole spectrum of beliefs present in climate science and you and pick and choose the ones you want to back with little worries of definitive proof that you're wrong appearing anytime soon. Now Gore was an early adopter of the anthropogenic global warming cause. He jumped on board back in the late 70's when worrying about the next ice age was vogue with the mass media. That's truely visionary. Gore has worked wonders in coverting others to his faith in this cause. Probably no single person deserves as much credit as Gore in manufacturing the concept of a scientific consensus on AGW. It doesn't matter whether a consensus exists or not, no one can prove it doesn't is all that matters. Gore has gotten the mass media to buy into the concept of this consensus with virtually no proof that it exists. Likewise he's done an admirable job, if not near as good as the one on consensus, at propagating the belief that anyone who questions AGW is a whacko on par with those who believe the earth is flat or are in the pay of some unprovable conspiracy cartel of evil oil companies. Like him or hate him, Gore is supremely talented at selling BS, or as he would call it organic growth enhancer suppliments. Gore has made hundreds of millions of dollars so far off of his support of AGW and stands to possible make billions. He has gained access to the worlds most powerful and influential leaders and the opportunity to strongly influence their decisions. He has become one of the best known and most recognized people in the world. When he speaks, people just don't listen; media around the world put his pronouncements in bolded headlines. Not too shabby for a divinity school dropout. What's even more amazing is Gore has a strong vested financial interest in promoting AGW, but he's almost never seriously questioned on this by the media. He is a total hypocrit in his lifestyle compared to what he preaches, but again the media lets him slide. Seriously can you imagin Bush or even Bill Clinton getting half as much leeway? Gore is a political god and global warming is his religion. Ultimately most citizens of the industrialized world will probably pay thousands of dollars each in tithing to Gore's religion. And Gore will see only a small fraction of that in realized profit. But even a small fraction of several trillion dollars is nothing to sneeze at. Sadly, probably millions of third world citizens will tragically see their life spans significantly shorted as their tithing contribution to the alter of AGW. But hey, you can't make an omlet without cracking a few eggs. And you can't get power and wealth without returning anything of value without someone paying the expense. I wish that I didn't have such flaws as a concience, honesty, and integrity; or I could possible be leading a life of fame, wealth, and power like Gore. Well I got to go. It's time for bed and I need to say some Hail Al's before I turn in. Everyone should take time to praise Al Gore, the Green Jesus, at least once per day.

I understand what you're saying Great Sommolier and I havn't called anyone here trash. The approach which you discribed is something which I have done since I was a child and still do. For me it's easier to just pick it up and throw it away. However, with the blinders that a lot of people choose to wear these days sometimes being called out on our actions is the best medicine. As for agreeing with others opinions including some of yours well what can I tell you that's what people do. If you want to look at it as congratulating each other so be it, but it's not all balloons and streamers on my end.

Trashtalking, American bashing, leader tromping and fasle facts. Being able to focus on the issue and speak intelligently in reference to actual research and past climatic facts would prove more fruitful than silly arguments over issues not pertaining to the discussion thread. There are effects from a disappearing ozone layer. There are effects from rising sea temperatures due to activity along the pacific ring of fire and currents that sweep up into the glacial areas. There are effects of burning fossil fuels used as lubricants for the tetonic plates causing pollution of our atmosphere and more drastic earthquakes. If we would all be just a little more respective of our planet which is our home and keep in mind that future generations may have a need for it, maybe we wouldnt trash it and make it unbearable for our grandchildren. First we must learn to respect and care for each other, harmony which starts first in the heart of one, can spread to the family of man and bring unity in purpose for our world. Love an Peace all, do what each can do for the problems you see. If you feel satisfied with your own participation...rock on.

Actually Sommelier, she wouldn't have noticed if someone didn't get into her face about it. That's what you don't understand about Americans. Some are so self-absorbed that they don't notice the disgusting things they do until you hit them over the head with a frying pan.

Coldwater and Hypno, I can't believe that you are congratulating each other for being rude to someone. You call the lady trash, but what you did is just as trashy. The classy thing to do was just let her SEE YOU obviously stop and throw HER trash away. I do it all the time. It let's them see the error of their ways without you giving them a reason to be mad. Do you get what I mean? When you give someone a reason to turn their chagrin at their own actions on you, it has no effect on the action. But, if she just sits there and has to deal with the fact that she littered and other people find that disgusting, she will think twice about it. That is what Americans don't understand. Tell everyone what you believe, and SOMETIMES use your words. Get it?

Ego - that is the ONLY thing you are soothing with your "green" way of living. You won't make a dent either way - neither will I and billions of other people. Short of detonating the remaining Nuclear weapons in the big 3s aresenals, or burning down every tree on earth, the damage man has done is minute. PROOF - ALL OF THE OTHER PLANETS ARE WARMING you silly silly people. Lets see you stop them from going greenhouse (relative to their atmospheres) by driving a Hybrid - what a joke.... And by the way, Htbrids are a joke - the damage caused by the manufacture of the LIPO cells, the disposal of them after they die, the damamge caused by using FAR MORE finite resource to build them is just like personal wind and solar - those cells and wind generator blades don't grow on trees. Geo thermal MAY actually be of some benefit on a personal scale, BUT there is a carbon footprint stomped big and wide BY THE PRODUCTION of the materials and supplies to build the system, and the installation of the system especially if it is a retrofit.... Sorry, but plain and simple logic doesn't support any of this. Unless you rid this planet of about 80% of its population you won't make a dent in grennhouse anything - and if you rid it of 80% of its inhabitants and their habits, the dent made will not be measureable. Read up - you have wasted all this time studying "green" now study science and industrial facts
