America's Terrorist Watch List Hits 1 Million Names
The good news is that Nelson Mandela is no longer on the US's terrorist watch list. The bad news is that the list now has 1 million names, which leads one to question just how effective this list really is. The ACLU says, "America's new million record watch list is a perfect symbol for what's wrong with this administration's approach to security: it's unfair, out of control, a waste of resources, treats the rights of the innocent as an afterthought, and is a very real impediment in the lives of millions of travelers in this country."

It could also be a lot lower, though. You never know.

Not that they'd underguess, but that the actual number may be hidden so people don't freak out. Just a completely unfounded conspiracy theory.

For some reason I doubt the ACLU is going to guess too low. That's just me, though.

If it's a guesstimate it could also be a lot higher, right?

Its a pretty big waste of energy!

The guy who keeps the list says there are 400,000 or so actual names, the rest are aliases etc. A guy named Jim Robinson is on it - based on the 1990 census, Robinson is the 20th most common surname in the U.S. James is the most common male first name. So how long does it take to be sure the Jim Robinson stopped at the airport ahead of you is really one of the safe Jim Robinsons? How carefully is he actually checked out? How big a waste of energy is this list, even if its only 400-thousand names and not one million?

I'm sure the accurate number isn't nearly as shocking, hence the not sorting.

Seems awful high. I think they should have the list sorted and have multiple people take parts of the list and organize. You think they would have it together.

Huffington Post via ACLUI am about to combust due to high doses of liberalism. I kid, I kid. I have noticed posts from a variety of sources lately, I just had to laugh at that byline!

I just heard on MSNBC that the 1 million number is a guestimate. They don't know how many names are actually on the list, they have just projected the amount using the a base number from several years ago and the rate of additions at that time. What a huge crock of dung.

"1 million names" is pretty vague. Does that mean 1 million people or literally 1 million names ie aliases? 1 person could have who knows how many aliases! I have a friend who got searched at the airport because his name is an alias of a suspected terrorist!I think I'll hold my outrage until that point gets cleared up.

This is scary. I hope I'm not on the list!

I would think this list MUST be terribly mishandled...if there are really a million names on the thing! YIKES!

Speaking as someone having issues moving to the US because I'm a former PETA member, trust me, it's scarily mishandled. I handed out pamphlets against kfc when I was in high school, now I'm on a list haha_____________________________________________________________________________________________I believe in Harvey Dent!
