Archie Comics Introduces a Gay Character — Interesting or Lame?

Archie Comics Introduces a Gay Character — Interesting or Lame?

This poll comes from community member Molly, who posted it in the new Let's Talk About __________? group in our TrèsSugar Community.

Riverdale High School has a new addition, and he's gay! Kevin Keller, who just joined the Archie Comic Books, is the first homosexual character to join the gang. The creator of the series had this to say about the addition, "The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books.” Kevin isn't the first homosexual comic book character — after all we recently learned about Batwoman — but as such a huge part of my childhood, I'm always interested in Archie news. So what do you think about such a cultural touchstone introducing a new gay character — interesting or lame ploy for headlines?

I think if they work with the story properly, it could be very interesting :) It's a great way to make the comic more current and spread awareness. Now, they could make it lame, but they also could take it to some awesome storylines.

I didn't know Archie was still around! I think it's great though... every little thing helps. It may be a marketing ploy, you can't survive if you don't keep with the times. postmod that is a great plot line!

I read this when I was a kid. These kids never grow up and the love triangle..never ends LOL. I don't mind a gay character, but they may just be doing it to attract more attention, but whatevs, as long as more interests and demands for the comic stay alive, that's good, I can't imagine them going away...them kids need to stay around forever! :)

I had a friend in third grade with an Archie collection to envy. I guess it makes sense to update characters and story lines, though I still think of Archie and the gang as those wacky teens from the 50's. They never age!

I love Archie comics! I've been reading them since I was four (I remember the first time I bought one on a camping trip)... and yes, I'm in my twenties and still read them :)I think this is awesome. Lots of young children read Archie comics and it's great that they're trying to show acceptance and not marginalize anyone by only showing a happy, white world that lacks diversity. It's great to promote those values while still young. You're never too young to learn tolerance and acceptance. Vanilla, there is a lot more to the world of Archie these days than just the love triangle between Betty, Archie, and Veronica. There's lots of characters, many with their own comics. And, actually, yes, the gay character being introduced will kind of get caught in the middle of that. From what I've read, Veronica develops a crush on him, and he has to turn her down and let her know he's into dudes. Maybe he'll try go for Archie too since he seems to be so irresistible to the ladies ;)

I'm definitely not homophobic or anything-but this completely ruins the gist of Archie comics. So, is the gay guy going to be caught between the Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangle? How lame.

I haven't read a comic in a while so this may spark my interest.

I've been collecting Archie comics for over 30 years now, and I think it's great. Riverdale continues to be my dream town!
