Technically, you don't. But if it's a close friend, it would be really thoughtful to bring something small ($10-20) for the first time you see the baby. A burp cloth, a cute pair of socks, a rattle or even a monogrammed bib. Just something to show your enthusiasm. At the shower you don't necessarily know if it's a boy or a girl and you don't know the baby's name. Personalizing something for the newborn is a sweet touch.
