Beginners Guide to Watching Porn

Hump Day: What to Expect When Watching Porn

Welcome to Hump Day, TrèsSugar's sex advice column. If you have questions about sex, send them to TrèsSugar, and our friend Dr. Charlie Glickman from Good Vibrations will offer his sound advice!

Today's question:
"I've been reading a lot about porn and women in the news lately, and I'm sort of interested. But the porn I know about it just for men, gay or straight. Any suggestions for where to find something that would interest me?"

I want to start by talking about the idea that there's a type of porn that men like and a type that women like.

It's true that there are trends in what porn different genders and sexual orientations like, just as there are trends in what nonsexual movies people like. Still there are plenty of women who love action movies, and there are lots of guys who enjoy a romantic comedy. If you've never watched much porn, the best thing to do is try a few different genres. After all, you won't know what you like unless you try it.

There are some general categories of movies, although Internet porn tends to blur some of the lines, but here are the four major categories.

  • Features
Features are movies with a plot and some story line in between the sex scenes. The story lines tend to be pretty simple. Since a 90-minute movie will have around 70-75 minutes of sex, there's not a lot of time to develop characters. Features tend to have bigger budgets, and the camera work, sound, and overall production values definitely show it. If you find the story distracting, you can always hit the fast-forward button.
  • Wall to Wall
Wall-to-Wall is another popular category, although at Good Vibrations, we call it All Sex, No Plot because more people understand what that means. There's often a common theme among the scenes, such as a location or sexual activity, but there's very little dialogue (if any) to distract you from the sex. These movies are sometimes a bit rougher in terms of production values, but they definitely make up for it with hot sex.
  • Gonzo/Hardcore
These movies are full of rougher sex with more of an edge to it. While they're not the best choice for everyone, if you like sex with that kind of a feel, this is the section to look in. But I usually suggest starting off with something milder to get a sense of what's out there; it can get extreme. Some retailers also have collections called New to Watching Porn or something similar.
  • Girl on Girl
Looking for some girl-on-girl action? Girl on Girl and lesbian movies both feature sexy action between women, but there's a difference between these sections. Girl on Girl movies are usually made by the mainstream porn industry, and the women might or might not have sex with women in their private lives. Lesbian movies are usually produced by real-life lesbians and focus on more realistic portrayals of sex between women.

If you're going to rent DVDs, get a few different ones and sample some different types of movies. Or go with video on demand and stream them right to your computer. You may find that you enjoy different movies or different sex scenes if you're watching them solo or with someone else. You might also discover that solo sex while watching porn changes the experience, so grab that vibrator and have fun!
