Biden Calls Email Ad Terrible, Then Regrets Hitting "Reply All"

Biden Calls Email Ad Terrible, Then Regrets Hitting "Reply All"

Did Joe Biden gaffe again? In a train-based interview with Katie Couric, she asked Biden about an ad being run by the Obama/Biden campaign mocking McCain's technological capabilities. Biden said of the ad, "I thought that was terrible by the way. I didn’t know we did it and if I had anything to do with it, we would have never done it”

The ad uses a disco ball and Rubik's cube to paint McCain as "out of touch" and says he "doesn't know how to use a computer," and "admits he can't send an email." What prompted Biden's discomfort with the ad? Perhaps this quote from a Forbes piece in 2000:

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the US Senate's savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. "She's a whiz on the keyboard, and I'm so laborious," McCain admits.

It didn't take long for Biden to realize he'd just slammed an ad approved by the ticket he's on, and an ad he'd never actually seen. To see his clarification and his "terrible" conversation with Katie,

.

He retracted the statement and issued the following:

Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that given the disgraceful tenor of Sen McCain’s ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize, especially when they continue to distort Barack’s votes on an issue as personal as keeping kids safe from sexual predators.

Is this a Biden gaffe? Was he hit by an attack of conscience, or is the argument that McCain can't email because of his injuries the part that's actually out of touch?

"I love Biden. He keeps it real. For a second. Until the Obama machine gets to him and then he has to eat his words." When I read the sentence above all I could think was how easily that can be changed to: "I love McCain. He keeps it real. For a second. Until the GOP machine gets to him and he has to eat his words." :P

lol, oh i knew his loose lips would make the campaign fun. but honestly, his being honest is refreshing. i think he's entilted to have independent thought and we all know the candidates have ZERO to do with campaign stragedy/hit pieces.

Half kudos to Biden. Half missing because he backpeddled. There is no golden boy anymore. They are both dirty campaigners now. It is gross. These last two from Obama are just silly. Why would the campaign team make these decisions after complaining about McCain ads? If you can't beat them, join them? That isn't a trait I want in my president.

Both campaigns have been playing ridiculous things. I don't see where people are saying McCain's been so much worse.

Isn't the election season over yet? I loved how he said the ad was terrible! Unfortunately, the truth will set you free of a job in politics.

I don't even think that ad aired anywhere except on the MSM. According to a politico, this ad about McCain being out of touch and the ads attacking Obama being sexist towards Palin were just for media consumption, but never used as ad buys in battleground states.Either way, Biden obviously regards McCain as a friend and is honestly genuine about it and I'm glad he was truthful on how he felt about the ad. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13536.html

I don't think anyone is going to be swayed by this Ad -- it's simply funny.

Now that's a campaign ad I'd love to see (being a child of the 80s), the candidates having a little fun and incorporating a little humor. Just to take the edge off all of the negativity.
