Biden to Florida Reporter: "Are You Joking?" During her interview with Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Orlando’s WFTV News anchor Barbara West came right out with some familiar-sounding questions: Is Barack Obama ashamed of his close ties to ACORN? Isn’t Barack Obama kind of just like Karl Marx? The reactions to the interview have been very strong and mixed.

"In any case, let's not pretend that socialist isn't being used as a dirty word right now." It is, but it only has the power that the individual gives it. (some are happy to be supporting a socialist) It's being used just like jabs about wardrobe expenses and the like to catch fringe voters who aren't actually paying attention to the issues. To many socialism is a dirty word, and you're right, it can be applied to some of both candidates' policies. It can be applied to more of Obama's, but again, I don't care what you want to call it. I don't care who is wearing what. I don't care if Biden has a slip of the tongue when counting letters. I don't care if Palin is good looking. What I do care about is where these people want to take us.

"maybe our schools will get better and students can learn the proper definition of socialism"Yes, hopefully they will. Perhaps, we will continue to pump more and more money into them like we have, and they will continue to get worse and worse. I'm not sure why our kids being stupid is being blamed on our government instead of on their parents or teachers or just them. There are a lot of people who went to these same public schools who are able to read by at least the eighth grade. Why can't today's kids get it? Is it because our government isn't stepping in and doing something, or is it because there are masses of idiotic people reproducing at an astonishing rate that lean and depend heavily on the government and teach their kids to do the same? Has the alphabet changed since I was in school, or has the individual? I didn't need the government to provide me with a computer to learn how to read. I didn't even need a computer to learn how to type or write a research paper. I didn't need one to add or multiply for me. I didn't need "No child left behind" to make sure I made it through school. I did it without the government paying me to go to school. I'm pretty sure most of you did too. Why do we feel that this is the government's responsibility and not the individual's?

"Why do so many of his supporters defend him by pointing out McCain's fiscal transgressions and acting like saying that Obama's policies are socialist is a terrible thing?" I'm pointing out McCain's transgressions because in my opinion it's hypocritical to call Obama a socialist and not McCain. What they propose is only a matter of degrees different. I'm not saying that McCain is equally as socialistic, I'm simply pointing out that the framework they're both running in already contains elements of socialism and has for decades. I'm not defending Obama's desire to raise taxes. As I stated, I'm not a fan. In any case, let's not pretend that socialist isn't being used as a dirty word right now. There are very few people who really understand what that word means, and I am not one of them.

Our government schools are included in the definition of socialism, but it doesn't surprise me that they didn't tell you that.

yawn. Let's just vote. If Obama wins, maybe our schools will get better and students can learn the proper definition of socialism. If he doesn't, our schools will get worse...

Anybody who is informed can see that Obama leans more that way than McCain does. Why do so many of his supporters defend him by pointing out McCain's fiscal transgressions and acting like saying that Obama's policies are socialist is a terrible thing? If some of McCain's are, but more of Obama's are (policies), why are you so mad/afraid/fed up with him being called a socialist? If you agree with his fiscal policies, who cares what they are being called? I agree that debating over and over whether he is a socialist or not is tiresome and stupid. What should be debated is what both candidates policies will/would result in.

Pop, I agree. From where I am sitting both candidates are socialists, and both camps are ridiculous for denying it. However, I think the issue is that Obama wants to implement more new socialist policies than JMac does.

"But instead we have McCain who voted for the socialist bail out and who wants to buy back overpriced mortgages at cost to relieve middle america of the burden of foreclosure. Tell me that isn't socialist!" Yeah, it is.

I'm just a little surprised at everyone's response to Obama's statement of spreading the wealth around. Is this the first time people have actually heard an honest assessment of what some of the US policies have been for decades? The income tax has been set up like this for a long time with the intent of spreading the wealth and with each giving according to his or her means. McCain isn't offering anything better than that. He's offering the same thing, with slight changes to the upper income tax brackets. Now don't get me wrong. I do not think ANY taxes should be levied at a time like this and I think it is a mistake to do so. BUT I also think it's a joke that Obama is somehow this crazy socialist because he stated those few words that effectively describe what the government has been doing for most of recent history. Now if the Repubs were offering up someone like Ron Paul, they could throw socialist around without it being the pot calling the kettle black. But instead we have McCain who voted for the socialist bail out and who wants to buy back overpriced mortgages at cost to relieve middle america of the burden of foreclosure. Tell me that isn't socialist! Sorry, this particular issue is driving me batty.

And yes, the tax structure does fit that description. That is why there are a lot of people who are not so happy with it.

"Was McCain socialist when he voted against the Bush tax cuts? If not, why? Isn't the tax structure set up now to be each according to their means?" I don't know what was on the rest of that bill, but the bailout is/was, I believe, a socialist fix. Unfortunately, in every election, we have to choose the "lesser of two evils." I hate that. I just think we can do better in America than the less crappy guy that was running. While McCain may have done some things in the past that had socialist tendencies, the center of his fiscal plan is not based on the redistribution of wealth, which is a socialist idea. That is what "I just think we can spread some of the wealth around," means.

These are questions that are out there though steph. it is the perfect opportunity for them to show their case. By cutting tail and running, they certainly aren't doing that.

Thanks Ginger. I hadn't heard that.

I stand corrected, because in looking at other sources, Jill Biden's mother did pass away earlier this month. Well, that's what I get for using Fox News as a source! I was trying to be "fair and balanced" but they were a few weeks late in reporting that as a reason for canceling this week's interview.

I think Biden's responses were spot on. I have asked this question on this blog a few times and never really gotten a response...Was McCain socialist when he voted against the Bush tax cuts? If not, why?Isn't the tax structure set up now to be each according to their means?
