I banged my nail so part of it turned black. How long will it stay black and what can I do to expedite the nail growth? Black and Blue Sue
Dear Black and Blue Sue
The medical term for a black nail is subungual haematoma. Subungual means 'under the nail', haematoma means 'bruise.' It's very common and there is nothing serious to worry about. It's really just a blood clot that has dried up (that's why it appears black). A new, healthy nail will grow back in its place in about 4-6 weeks. Pre Natal vitamins or Phyto Phytophanere Dietary Supplement can certainly help to advance the process - and will also make your hair shiny and healthy as an added bonus! Iron and zinc are important to add to your diet and whatever you do - don't pick at it. You may feel some pain due to the trauma of the bang but that should subside as the new nail develops. Also, don't panic if the nail happens to fall off. A new one will grow back but during the wait, just be sure and keep the exposed area clean and protected. Wear a sock or a band aid if you are going to be on the beach (as funny as you'll feel). For now, at least the dark nail vamp look is back in. Try wearing Essie's Bordeaux or Wicked Nail Polish or Chanel's old school polish in Vamp.
