I don't think saying the pledge every day makes anyone brain-washed. I see nothing wrong in teaching kids to have respect for the flag.

i remember in elementary and middle school when teachers would make us stand, put our hands over our hearts, and recite the pledge of allegiance. and then when we all found out they couldn't make us, lots of people stopped doing it and saying it was their right not to. which i totally agree with if that floats your boat. "I guess, I never took pledging allegiance very seriously growing up. I kind of liked it! And don't think I was brainwashed in anyway."i agree with you nyfashionista.

Ok that MSNBC promo cannot be real. Am I taking the sarcasm too literally? And I don't think anyone should be forced to do anything! There are many people who are Christians that do know recite the pledge of allegiance since they think they are worshiping false idols. I think everyone should stand out of respect, but again you shouldn't be forced to do it.

Okay I loved the zippity do dah music. That was hilarious. If they want to not kiss until marriage that is their business. I hope they're happy, but I still don't agree with abstinence only education.I have to agree with Michelin and that isn't even touching the added "under God" part.

:rotfl: I was scrolling down on my phone reading all the new posts and I passed by this one and thought it said "new post-election porno"lol... just had to throw that out there ;)I don't agree with forcing students to say the pledge. I do think they should be given the option every day and the students who want to will do so. I recently did an observation at a local school for my degree. Every day during 2nd hour the office aide would come over the intercom and would lead the school in the pledge.

"I'd rather we leave school for school and teaching a good civics and proud and honest history courses could make children patriotic." - I can agree with this. Except, "a good civics and proud and honest history course" is pretty hard to achieve :) I guess, I never took pledging allegiance very seriously growing up. I kind of liked it! And don't think I was brainwashed in anyway. In fact bc of my "very liberal" political stances, I've been called un-patriotic! But I understand the "parents pushing their own political agenda" argument (although that can happen in other ways as well I suppose).

BTW even if you take out the "religious" aspect some people could argue that some of the words in the pledge are false " with liberty and justice for all" i.e. Gay's think there liberties are currently being stomped upon and our justice system while the best in the world is not equal for all people.

I think each kid should be able to choose, or at least get permission from the parents (i.e. the parent chooses). While I'm not at all religious the use of the word GOD in the pledge may not be okay for every person i.e. Atheist etc

Sometimes I would pledge to the allegiance and some teachers would bitch about it but whatever, I didn't have to do it if I didn't want to. I'm so glad I'm graduated from that shit hole.

I really dislike the pledge of allegiance. It is dangerous to teach blind loyalty to a country or its flag.

I mostly agree Fashionista, but it's the crazy parents who turn everything into a political war that makes me against it - you know it will become nothing more than a controversy with parents getting too excited (when the same can't be said about how they monitor their kids' grades) - I'd rather we leave school for school and teaching a good civics and proud and honest history courses could make children patriotic.

I don't think there's anything wrong with saying the pledge of allegiance everyday in class, although I definitely understand why the "under God" part is controversial (and wouldn't be opposed to kids not saying it at all). I think we can use a little patriotism while growing up and realize that no matter how different we look from one another, or what our backgrounds may be, we are still all American and should be proud of that fact.
