My best friend just had a baby, and it's really... not... cute... I know that is terrible to say. Babies are a miracle of life and are supposed to be beautiful creatures, but this baby inherited every bad feature from its parents. Instead of looking like a 6 month old boy, he looks 30! I feel guilty even admitting this, but I think my friend is starting to wonder why I don't fawn over her new baby as much as she does. I'm really afraid it will ruin our friendship! What should I do? Dear Ugly Duckling
This reminds me of that Seinfeld episode with the baby no one thought was adorable! You are right about one thing; babies are a miracle of life. Ugly, fat, weird - they should all be loved the same. Of course your friend is going to fawn over her child and if you are any kind of a friend, you will too. You can't be biased to only liking cute kids. But you don't have to lie and say it's cute or beautiful! Just be her friend and be supportive. New Mom's are going through a tough time of adjustment and change - if she thinks you think she has a busted looking baby, she'd be devastated.
