Career Turnoffs

What Careers Are Turnoffs?

We probably shouldn't judge people by their jobs, but we do. A fascinating career can make you want to know someone more, while a boring one can make a person seem just that.

Chelsea Clinton is marrying investment banker Marc Mezvinsky. It's unlikely she has any qualms about his profession, considering she works in finance too, but it's one of those divisive professions. Plenty of women love i-bankers, others don't have a problem either way, but some wonder if anything beyond money really interests them. At least they have it!

On the opposite end of the career spectrum, my friend recently refused to date a bartender. She wanted to get past it, but kept thinking his job was an extension of a refusal to grow up or lack of ambition.

What careers are red flags for you?

A clown would be a turn-off for me. I just Don't Like Clowns.

When I fell for him, his career goals did not involve the Navy. That was a huge change. I never would have picked a military guy either, it just worked out that way. Life is funny like that :P

oh wow! Yeah as a spoiled only child i need more attention than a military man/lawyer could provide haha. But that's great that your boyfriend is so ambitious!

A guy who worked in the business of exploiting animals (meat/dairy/egg/fur farmer, butcher, slaughterhouse owner/employee, something along those lines). I couldn't date someone in the adult industry either, especially an actor. Maybe behind the scenes (I'm not anti-porn). onlysourcherry - My guy is a pilot in the military who wants to be a lawyer in the future LOL I don't look forward to him going away (he's training now, so he's here a lot), but when he's a lawyer, I hope to see him more :) I get what you're saying, those who are married to their job or have jobs that take them away can be hard to be involved with.

In addition to many that others have mentioned: club/bar owner, pilot, poet, military, doctor/lawyer (because they'd never be around). I guess I'm kind of picky. Good thing my boyfriend's career was a green light!

Teacher. I'm a teacher and I don't want to talk about school/children/PTA/anything related to my job after work.

Haha, no worries, I wasn't insulted! Real estate developers always have a bad rap ;)

Sorry Postmod... I didn't mean to insult your dad! We've got a lot of military in the family - love them, but wouldn't date or marry them.

What glowingmoon said! Also I agree spiderlove musicians and actors are just out of the question! Along with garbage men (I know they make good money apparently, but it's just not someone I'm trying to be with), porn stars/producers, and bums =)

Entertainment industry, bartender or bar manager. Grew up in the "musician" lifestyle, saw far too much .... couldn't be with a musician or actor.

Anyone working retail full-time after the age of 30 and not in a managerial position. I also don't know if I could date a lawyer or doctor, because I think I would feel less-than-intelligent the majority of the time!

I thought I would be okay with anything untl I read some of the other comments and I had to rethink my opinion. Nothing in the sex industry. Nothing that involves doing things that are immoral or illegal.

As long as it's ok with my ethics/personal beliefs (like stephley asked, I could not marry the chairman of BP, haha). I coud not date someone with a religious career/employed by a church. Also, lack of ambition is a huge turn-off to me. My dad is a real estate developer, stephley ;) He's my favorite guy on earth. Real estate developers are usually never presented in a positive light, though.

I totally agree with KittyTX. Anyone who goes into a career for money, not for the fulfillment it brings. I couldn't stand dating someone whose career goals involved any kind of deception, greed, or shameless lobbying for a certain social or political agenda. It says too much about their character.

I'll say professional athlete( or someone famous) and someone in the military. I said this because they usually have to travel a lot and don't have much control of where they are, and I just won't be a fan of that.

What if they're chairman of BP?

No real career is a turn off but being a hugely creative person, I find i am less interested and more prone to judge people who work in finance or any other non creative professions. But I am never one to judge and if your interesting to me and happy, who cares what you do?

Glowingmoon summed it up for me. I appreciate a man who is passionate about his job enough to work hard for it, but knows when to relax and leave it at the office. That being said, conflicting schedules can create career turnoffs for sure.

It really depends on his career goals and determination. I would agree that a porn star would be a no-no for me :) Practically speaking, I would prefer to date someone with a stable job who possesses the motivation to be successful.

Looking back at the opening blurb, I can't see why someone would equate being a bartender (or any other service industry job, really) with a lack of ambition or an unwillingness to grow up. One of the smartest, kindest, most mature men I know, one to whom I'm very attracted, drives a bus. He doesn't want that job for any length of time, but that's only because he has another goal: He wants to work at an amusement park. He was in charge of the rides department at a Six Flags park and loved it, but was laid off when the park changed owners. Now he's making ends meet (an admirable quality in itself!) and enjoying his driving job as much as he can. Maybe this is because I've been involved with a pizza driver, a trucker, a couple career amusement park guys, and a bartender, but I find nothing wrong with the service industry.
