Comment du Jour: Phil Doesn't Like New Jersey

Comment du Jour: Phil Doesn't Like New Jersey

"I appreciate your objection, but New Jersey is arguably the epicenter of macho douchebaggery, even douchebagguettery in the US. To kill a tree, you need to attack the roots, and a major part of the root structure happens to run in Jersey."

— TrèsSugar reader Phil on the post What Macho Traits Do You Wish Would Go Away?, providing his theory of how to rid the world of negative macho traits.

I'm in central NJ so we do have the bagel places and italian food, but that's about it. Sure, its great, but I wouldn't mind going to a good Greek or French place every now and then.

Wow! I was born and raised in North East NJ, and I can definitely say that while I see where "Phil" is coming from, that's a pretty stereotypical statement. Yes, there are plenty of douche bag guidos in NJ, but there are a lot of "normal" guys too. Sheeesh! soapbox, where in NJ are you from? No good food places? Wow! I moved out of NJ 3 years ago and miss the food more than anything (besides my family and friends)! Bagels, pizza, REAL Italian food... it's the best.

I agree with anonymous @ 2:51^^^ Jersey does have some gorgeous areas. I'm not from the douchebag macho area and rarely run into the type. Actually, most of my neighbors are ex-new yorkers. I guess most of the people around here are spoiled, but they're not obnoxious about it. Jersey gets such a bad rap because a lot of the reality TV personalities are from here, but its a pretty decent place to live. That being said, I only have one complaint about NJ. The food is terrible. I guess going to school in Manhattan spoiled me. I mean, the only eateries here are franchises, chinese takeout that tastes terrible and italian takeout. We have so many Italian places that that's all I eat during those busy weeks. And then, the only place to get a cup of coffee around here is Dunkin' Donuts, which is like drinking brown water IMO. Yes, we do have starbucks, but the closest one is about 10 miles from my house. Oh and in my area there are NO smoothie places. Its terrible. I'm a foodie, so Manhattan is definitely my speed, but I would ALWAYS be a Jersey girl at heart!

As someone who was born in Staten Island and then transplanted to central NJ, I have to give my opinion. Most of the state is not the guidofest myspace and MTV would have you believe. And, as I've worked in Staten Island for years, I've come to realize that that's actually where most of the people populating the S. Jersey beaches that you run into during the summer months come from.

Yes, TammyO, douchebags can be anywhere but there's a particularly high concentration in New Jersey. And yes I think you're correct, it is my understanding that they mostly reside in South New Jersey. I do like the idea of a bi-state surgical strike to decontaminate the state. Exit strategy to be determined at a later period.

I was born and raised in Long Beach Islande/ Manahawkin NJ... i COMPLETELY agree with the comment. As soon as I turn 18 I moved to Florida and will NEVER move back to NJ... and i only go back on short (like 3-5 day) vacations once or twice a year... hate it... the people, especially where I live, are the epitome of spoiled, wannabe's, assholes, etc. in our country... But then again, I've only been to the East Coast... not too sure about the other areas of the US.

Well that's crap! New Jersey has many more areas than Camden and tough inner citys with douchebags. There are pastoral farms, there's beaches, there indeed are quaint towns where people actually look out for on another. Douchebags can be anywhere! Maybe mostly in the South?

I agree with this comment as well. I am from middle NY and we refer to New Jersey as the armpit of the northeast. NJ is where we send the majority of our trash. Therefore, NJ smells.

Well, I'm from Long Island, and Long Islanders universally disdain New Jersey.

As a former Jersey girl myself (born and raised) I will say there are definitely douchebags. But I am willing to bet a ton of people base their opinions on what they see on MySpace and on TV...not real life. I have met more normal people than guidos. I also know tons of macho men, and not all from the area. I understand how it's kind of normal to blame a specific group, because it's the cool thing to do...just not totally realistic.
