Dear Poll: Do You Feel Like an Adult?

There was a time not long ago when it felt like the word "adult" shouldn't be applied to me but only used for real grown-ups like my parents. Then suddenly I woke up and realized that if I have all the responsibilities of an adult, I must actually be one, too! Truth be told, I may not be a kid anymore, but some days I don’t feel much like an adult either. What about you?

I'm 22 and just bought my first house. At 21 I got my first job teaching art to over 450 kids. I made my way into adulthood fast... still now I can't believe where I am. My boyfriend and I bought the house together and we were talking on the couch yesterday about what we'd think about ourselves now looking back in ten years. Though we'll be even more of 'adults' then we both decided we're still going to be the exact same. I also had an 'issue' with turning 22 at the time,... it's such a silly thing to fear yet I loved the idea of being 21. I'm turning 23 this coming month and I don't mind it,..I've accomplished far more than I thought I would at this age which makes me tremendously happy.

Everyone thinks I look way younger than I am.

Adulthood is a figment of our imagination, a social construction, and a completely irrelevant state of mind. The day that I don't have a sudden urge to pop bubble wrap or go down the big twisty slide will be a sad day indeed!

I'm still in college, so knowing that my parents pay for my bills, I can always turn to them to "make everything alright," and not fully understanding the responsibilities of home ownership, being married, and having a career, I am still very much a kid.

I'm only 20 and although I have a job and live out of home with friends I still don't feel like an adult as I don't have many responsibilities other than rent/cell phone bill. No pets, boyfriend/husband, full time career (currently in retail part time), bills, mortgage....anything, really.

I dunno...I think yesterday was like the first time I realized that I am an adult. I have been living on my own for a year now, I it kinda just clicked in me recently that I can make my own choices - andy choices - and I shouldn't feel bad or ask my parents what they think... It's weird it took me this long...but I feel a lot different!

I guess I'm one of the few who picked I'm an adult through and through, but I am and I love it! Ever since I decided to embrace being an adult, I love how much better I feel just sucking things up, getting them done, and moving on. Also, it feels great not to waste time with immature men--no need for kids games to me! :) But of course I still play actual games and sports and enjoy life, but I don't worry about if other people will like me for me anymore.

I'm turning 24 next month, and I definitely don't feel like an adult! Sure, I have a grownup job and an apartment, but I still feel like a kid.

Firstly, I think Catherine Zeta Jones is lying about her age. She's in her late 30's, my foot. When I told my husband her reported age, he laughed out loud. Hubbie and I are in our 30's, and we find it hard to believe she's about our age. In fact, we DON'T believe it. :) Anyhoo, depending on the circumstances, I can either be an adult or child-like. I like to consider myself being the best of both worlds -- responsible, rational, reasonable, and mature like an adult, and yet still have the sense of wonder, curiosity, innocence, and quick to laugh like a child. I try to strike a balance between the two, as I think there are virtues in both roles. There are vices, too, and I try to give up the vices, and keep the good qualities. :)

BTW I love that I get carded.

I am 38 and look really, really young. I don't think of myself as an adult all the time. When I think that Catherine Zeta Jones and I are the same age I just think it is weird because she actually looks like a grown woman and I still get carded.

i feel like an adult sometimes and then there are other times (like when we rode the famous carousel downtown) that i still feel like a big kid. but i pay my own bills--am saving for things--try to think more of the *future* and not the present... everything that when i was younger was told thats what an adult is...or at least the adult decisions

I actually had the weirdest feeling the other day: I realized that my society is beginning to be run by people my age, even me and my friends! I sell a "woman" my age coffee, she takes her kid in a stroller to the daycare so she can work at the bank. It just feels like we are all kids playing grownup! It's surreal.

I think I associate being a grownup with not relying on your parents, so it's like, for every bill that I pay myself, it's one more stage of adultness lol!

I'm getting close to 30 and I feel like an adult because I am completely independent from my parents, pay rent, work full time, etc. I have really good credit and enough saved to buy a house/condo soon. I would like to get married but my boyfriend is being weird about it. But I also do stuff like go to concerts, go to comic con, play video games, read young adult books... just because you are an adult doesn't mean you can't be a kid at heart!

It took me a while but I think I've finally reached adulthood all the way. I'm 30 years old but since my mid twenties I've been very focused on being mature about things and carrying myself a certain way. I may have my days when I feel like acting silly and let loose but for the most part I think I'm pretty well rounded by now. : )

Oh, I'm still a child in so many ways. I'm 29 and still in school (it's grad school, but still) so I was an adult and worked a job for several years, but not now. I feel very immature and young, especially with finances.

Amen, Lissy! I'm getting married next summer, but can I be somebody's wife? I'm sure I can be, and I love my fiance to pieces, but whoa! I'm also in an interesting position because I'm a 23-year-old fifth grade teacher. I am Mama to a bunch of ten and eleven-year olds, which can be really weird to be 12 years older than they are and assume the role of their parent. A lot of them aren't getting parented at home (nurtured, or given boundaries), so I'm a full-blown adult at school and more of a kid at home.

I am a grown up kind of. I just got married a few months ago and I still get freaked out about being a wife. I have to say the word husband like a 100 times a day just to remind myself that he's not my "boyfriend" anymore. I also stay up late on Friday nights just cause and stay in my PJ's on Saturdays. I am super goofy and childlike most of the time. But then at weird moments I totally feel grown up. Like when I go grocery shopping like for real and have to buy healthy food or when I write a check or pay a bill or fill up the gas tank. Those are all grown up moments and they come with this weird childlike glee because I feel like I'm in costume and I'm fooling people

sun_sun I turned 23 in July and I feel the same way - and also that I have to be incredibly annoying to anyone older than me, whining about 23. I was saying to my bf the other night that it's probably weird that I still call people "grown ups", since I'm a college graduate, but I don't consider myself an adult yet.
