Dear Poll: Do You Talk Openly About Your Period?

Even though most women get their periods every month, for some reason a lot of us feel the need to talk about it like it's a new phenomenon. Since we all experience cramps, bloating, and the occasional shed tear, I don't understand why so many women want to draw any more attention to that time of the month than they have to. I seldom complain about PMS but do you openly discuss your period in front of your friends, your significant other, or even your co-workers?

While I don't run around the streets, tampons in hand, screaming "I got my period!! I got my period!!" I do mention good old Aunt Flo from time to time

Er, my post made it sound like men get periods too, I did not mean to imply that!

Zero- I used to have that problem too! I got so severely ill and would shake from the chills and throw up, and I wanted people to understand why I would probably be fine to come in the next day! However, if people don't get that severely ill, ESPECIALLY women, they don't understand. One of my bosses was like..."every woman goes through it, just deal." Right, well, every woman doesn't throw up and have her temperature drop 4 degrees!! Now, bc pill pretty much helps it be not so bad that I have to miss work, but usually because I just skip the placebo pills and rarely decide to get a period.

I'll talk about it with girlfriends (I hear about it a lot, one friend is very open about these things and I don't mind), but not with the boyfriend, or people I don't know well. I don't even like to mention cramps in that situation.

If it's especially bad I'll talk about it with my friends or my husband but only when it comes up or prevents me from doing something.

My boyfriend definitely hears about it, cause he takes care of me. And I let my co-workers know, cause most months I get really sick, to the point where I usually throw up. So I let them know that I'm going home, but I'm fine, and I'll be back tomorrow. That way no one worries that I've come down with something contagious, and they leave me alone!

The only thing I ever talk about is being bloated...that sucks!

only if i need to duck out of something. i go to kung fu 3x/week, and i catch a lot of krappe if i miss a day. if i'm close to someone and especially if it's a female, i'll just say, "pardon - i just got hit with the axe, so please excuse the audible groaning." i don't ever talk about it with my guy friends (except for The Husband - and he usually knows due to the appearance of the Tampax box next to the toilet).

No, but my friends ask me about birth control pills haha, don't know why. I guess I do sometimes with my mother, only because I'm under her insurance and my hormones were f*cked for the longest time, and we found out it was caused by a more serious issue that has been resolved.

LOL @ plasticine. I talk about it, but only to certain people and I don't give the gory details. I don't see a problem with complaining a little bit. I feel like talking about your period isn't very taboo anymore. I don't think people visualize it and get grossed out, ya know? I usually will only bring it up to my friends if I'm having bad cramps or something. I feel like it's a sort of common bond and it's easy to talk about with your girl friends. One time I remember even comparing how long ours last and how severe our cramps are. I just think it's too weird to talk about with guys beside my boyfriend, unless if it's a real general conversation.

Its not a big deal listening to other people talking about it but i wont say anything when i have mine because i think i make other people uncomfortable. But thats just my opinion. =]

I'd rather just take some pills and forget about it! It would be silly going on and on about it month after month.

I only tell if I get bad enough that I have to cancel plans or if I feel really sick. I don't like telling the world or other girls telling me, not because I'm uptight or anything but because I've got enough with my own, kthx.

Yeah, my girlfriends and I notify each other when it's "that time of the month." I dunno...It always comes up. However, ever since a girl in ninth grade said to me, "Yeah, when I get my period, it's like a murder scene down there," I've been pretty graphic sometimes, too. Around my boyfriend...Oh, he knows! I'm disgustingly open about myself to my boyfriend. It's almost to the point of torture because I pretty much make him experience it with me, even to the smallest drop.

Sometimes I do to my friends' dismay. :) I have severe PMS, both physically and mentally. I feel really ill. Also, I'm very regular, so go through it every dang month.I listen to my friends when they vent about their medical conditions. Some of their stuff is much more graphic than my monthly girlfriend, so I don't feel bad when I talk about her. :)
