Dear Poll: Does Misery Love Company?

The saying is "misery loves company," but does it? When I am feeling blue, sick, or just plain old angry, I prefer to be alone - other people add to my irritation when I'm in that state of mind. But, some people love to vent to a friend or be pampered by a loved one after a bad day so tell me, does the saying ring true for you? Do you prefer commiserating with others when you're down in the dumps or do you like to just be by yourself?

It depends on the situation, but most of the time I like to be by myself and listening to sappy music. LOL!

i think - as cymone has mentioned earlier - that the phrase was misinterpreted by whomever wrote this poll; it means dragging others down with you when you're feeling miserable yourself.

i like being alone when I'm depressed or something, if there was company, it'd probably end up in all the bottled up anger or depression on to him/her

For me it depends .......if i'm feeling sad or depressed normally i deal with it by myself but there are certain times it also helps to talk about it with someone who i'm close to and as for when i'm sick ,definitely being left alone is exactly what i need.....

I'm such an unpleasant person to be around when I'm upset. I'd rather be left alone to just cry, or sleep it off, or go to the gym and burn it off.

When I am depressed, I prefer to be alone. Not because I am not good to be around. I just need time to shut down and shut my brain down. Sometimes I need to take the journey and embrace the emotional pain before I can step away from it.That is hard to do when others are around because they either want to talk or cheer you up.I picked Depends because no one way to deal is perfect for every occasion. So sometimes well timed person helps and sometimes it doesn't.

When I'm sad or angry or anything negative, my friends know and they'd go and try to make me laugh (get Chris or John, and its possible). Or they would try to find out whats wrong and if its about a guy, Chris would say "Cholz, why're you emo? Who do I have to beat up?!", then they'd go hunt him down (no joke) and take him to face me and (again, Chris) would be "beating him up" (not literally, joke-joke thing) to make me laugh, yet again. But if its something totally serious, its just Mark trying to keep everyone away, and we'd go out to eat or stoll in the park (yeah...) to talk about it.

There are times when I want to be alone. When I'm sick with a flu, don't bother me! But if it's just a miserable cold, I like the company to watch movies or whatever. When I'm sad or depressed, I usually want some time to myself and then at some point I'm ready to talk it all over with someone I trust. So that's a mixed bag.

If I'm just irritable, I prefer to be left alone. My bad moods are usually caused by stress, and some downtime alone to decompress (or to nap) usually takes care of things. If I'm truly miserable for some reason, like I'm sick or depressed, I prefer to have the people that I'm closest to around to comfort me and take my mind off of things. No strangers, though. I hate strangers.

ugh, i just hate people, i really do. All the people ive met (and i dont mean this twords everyone so dont take offense)are fake, care too much about what other people think, or overly dramatic. and frankly, it gets on my nerves. I dont even enjoy the company of my friends!i hang out with people just so i dont feel like a complete loser. i need help! but as always, i cant get it

misery is different from having a bad day. there is some comfort (to me) in finding that other, perfectly nice, "normal" people have had some of the same things happen to them. support groups are for this type of emotion. aa, loss of a child, etc., the things in life that cause real struggles.

I am pretty much a loner. I live alone. I have no boyfriend, which sucks. I do have several close friends and family nearby, but if i am in a bad mood or sad or depressed, I just want to be alone. Just give me some junk food or some starbucks, my favorite tv shows on dvd, a book of sudoku and i can work through just about anything.

i think the saying means if someone is unhappy they try to bring others down with them. i have a friend like that who when ever she breaks up with a guy she'll find things wrong with my boyfriends and just pick at my life like she wants me to be just as unhappy as her... but for me i like to talk about things when i'm unhappy.

When I broke up with my latest bf. I spent a lot of time with my mom to take my mind off of it. We would just watch TV. My brother and I would hang out too. I needed family comfort at that time.

If I'm sad or sick, I don't mind being alone. When I recently broke up with my ex and was devastated, I didn't want to be alone at all! When I am just moody-leave me alone!

It allllll depends. If I'm sad or upset or sick, I want my boyfriend around to help me and talk to me and love me.But if I'm mad at him or it's somethign he doesn't need to know about, I like being alone with time to think to myself.
