Dear Poll: How Do You Feel About Romantic Films?

Whenever I see a romantic comedy, or even a epic romance film, I can't help but feel a little frustrated. Sure, I love to see the main characters end up happily ever after, but let's be realistic, it usually doesn't work out that way! I happen to think movies like When Harry Met Sally give false hope that Mr. Right could be right in front of your face when realistically that's a pretty uncommon scenario. I hate to be a Debbie Downer but I have to ask, do you think romance films negatively impact real-life relationships? Do they leave a sour taste in your mouth because they are so unrealistic, or do they give you hope that one day, you'll have your own version of a fairly-tale ending?

Sometimes they can be way too far fetched but I love them all the same....although I couldn't watch them non stop forever, I need variety in my movie watching.

i love them, as long as they are also fun and intelligent. they do not depress me, even though obviously real life relationships are much more complex. real life can also be very romantic at times.. just not ALL the time..

I love them since those kinds of things do happen in real life once in a while. You never know where love could be and that is really the point of romantic movies. That being said I probably wouldn't like them as much if I were single lol.

I love romantic movies, and I always have. It's not that they give me hope, b/c I'm married and very happy, I just love that type of movie. :)

I just don't like them, period. And I married my best friend.

If it's a good movie, I'll probably like it. If it's not, I probably won't. Genre doesn't itself define whether I'm going to like a movie or not, nor does my relationship status.

I have always hated chick flicks. Not because they are mushy and make me want that...but I find them pretty boring and pridictable!

I should add that I don't dislike ALL romantic movies. There are some that I dig. Like When Harry Met Sally, Atonement, Annie Hall, The Princess Bride, Before Sunset, True Romance, Eternal Sunshine, Say Anything... I'm sure there are a few more. But I haven't liked most of the romantic movies that I've seen: Love Actually, Sleepless in Seattle, How to Lose a Guy, You've Got Mail, Notting Hill, Sweet Home Alabama, Two Weeks Notice, etc. They do nothing for me.

I'm not a big fan of romantic movies as a genre. Not because they depress me or make me bitter, but more because they're just not my cup of tea. I agree with kia above: a good movie is a good movie, it doesn't matter what it's about.

I like romantic comedies. I'd rather not just this uber sappy movies, I like a little chuckle or two.

It depends on how well made the movie is. I don't care if I am in a relationship or not. A bad movie is a bad movie.

I don't hate romantic movies but I usually watch them to make me feel better and I end up feeling sad because I haven't found anyone yet. :(

eightieslingo you just made want to watch amelie.I love romance movies, but I hate how they are idealized. My boyfriend wouldn't do a lot of the cutesy stuff that are in the movies... Boo.

I said other. I usually can't stand them at all. I'm married so they don't make me bitter, I just don't like the way they portray love. They're totally unrealistic. In fact, real life love is a million times better. There are a few exceptions. I love Amelie, Pride and Prejudice and a few others but not very many romance movies make the cut for me.

I can't stand them. I've given them several chances, but to no avail. I am in a loving relationship so I'm not bitter about them. I just find them annoying. :-)
