Dear Poll: Are you Comfortable Asking for More Money in the Work Place?

According to a new study at Carnegie Mellon University, reported in the Washington Post, women were far less likely compared to men to negotiate their salary, especially when the decider was a man. On the flip side, when a woman was the decider, she tended to penalize both men and women equally who negotiated their salary.

While many people believe men are simply more aggressive than women in the workplace, the difference in negotiating salary isn't necessary because women don't know how to haggle per se, it's more that they are afraid of being perceived as the "not so nice-girl."

Since women have a strong presence in the work place, what I want to know is, do you feel comfortable negotiating your salary with your boss or new potential employer?

I chose other just because now most companies have a standard that use for when you receive a raise. My old company was small so it was easy to point out why I deserved more money but at my current company it is one of the top companies to work for in the country so it is not that easy since everything is based on your twice a year review!

I am comfortable talking about money, it's just that i do not know how to tell my boss that I want a raise...

Ummmm...I've always been kind of uncomfortable with it. Of course, I have no issue talking about financial stuff with the hubby, but that's a completely different subject.But now that I started a new job at a considerably higher rate than my last one, I'm pretty happy with it. It's not enough to soley support my family, per say...but I'll wait a year or so before I start talking to my boss about a raise.

The problem is, I have no idea what other people at my level are making. I know for sure that I work harder than they do, and I feel like I have to trust that my boss is rewarding me accordingly. The weird thing is, I'm always suspicious that I'm not getting paid as well as this other guy, who always dresses fancy. I'm in a scientific setting, so it really makes no sense to wear very nice clothes if we're risking ruining them, and I'm not even allowed to wear heels. I'd say 95% of the scientists dress casually, with jeans and a nice shirt, but this guy, even at entry level, wears the swishy slacks and very preppy shirts and his Blackberry. Maybe he comes from a rich family or whatever, but he also seems to get recognized for accomplishments (with money!) a lot more than I do (as in never), even though I work a lot harder than he does (definitely long hours, and no, I'm not wasting time at work), we've been here the same amount of time, and we both came straight from college (mine was even more technical). Does anyone else feel like dressing better gets your more attention (and rewards that go with it)?

I said other b/c in the military, you don't get a choice of what you make a year. It all depends on your rank.

I feel that complaining about what you're making COMPARED to others is like benefiting on their behalf. I'm not afraid of asking for a raise, but the question is this: if I think I deserve it, will he necessarily see it that way, regardless of how much I convince him with my speech?

I always feel greedy and ungrateful if I ask for more money from the boss. Now I'm a stay-at-home mom, so I don't have to worry about that! :)

I hate asking for more money. I admittedly do not think that I am worth very much and I feel lucky to have a job at all.

It's important to point out WHAT makes you qualified for the raise and what you will be able to better contriute b/c of it. For Instance, if you are in a job where a second language would be an asset, say that you have been taking classes to increase fluency... Thus the additional skill will reach an entirley new clientbase/market and thus increase revenue...

I have completely freaked when it comes to asking for money until the person who replaced me when I was PROMOTED started making more money than me. I went to the boss to complain and now I'm getting a 15% raise!

I'm in a union, so my (small) raise comes once a year, and I really can't ask for anything other than that. Some people love being in a union, but I'm not a fan. I go above and beyond for my boss and colleagues, yet I cannot get rewarded for it.

When I have issues with my salary I go straight to my boss about it. I feel bad doing it because I make plenty of money and feel crazy complaining, but for me it's the principle, not the money, that gets to me. He always responds well.
