I am one of those word dorks who gets a "Dictionary Word of the Day" sent automatically to my email. I was very pleased recently when one of my fave words — virago — showed up. I'd understood it to be, essentially, a fancy word for "b*tch." Well, what do you know! You know how people say that "b*tch" can be a compliment, because what it really describes is a strong woman who won't be a doormat? Well, look no further than the dictionary to confirm the suspicion! A woman of extraordinary courage and strength is a hair's breadth away from being scolding, ill-tempered and quarrelsome. Ummm, yeah! Because even the damned dictionary equates strength with b*tchiness. (And don't get me started on the strong = man-like etymology.) Maybe if I stop reading the dictionary, I won't be such a virago. Fat chance.
