The Perks of Getting Married in Your Early 20s

Divorce Rate Lower Among College Educated

Can't Buy Me Love? Money Helps Marriages

Researchers at the National Marriage Project may soon be out of a job if the economy doesn't pick up. A new study put on by the University of Virginia research group discovered that less well-off Americans are less likely to get married.

The study found that 44 percent of Americans with a high school diploma but no college degree have children without being married, while only six percent of highly educated unmarried women have children. Many of these unmarried couples live like a family, but they often avoid making it official thanks to money concerns. They want to get financially stable before paying for a pricey wedding or even worse, a pricey divorce. Which makes sense: Americans with only a high school diploma have a 37 percent divorce rate, while the divorce rate among the college educated has dropped to 11 percent.

The findings suggest that marriage might soon become an elite privilege. The study points to a change in Middle America's "family values" that now makes it OK to cohabitate or have children out of wedlock while you figure out finances, making marriage something to aspire to and not something you have to do.

I agree that money makes a marriage easier but only if both people know how to manage it. I prefer to be married to a college educated man because I know that he will always have more job opportunities and job security. College teaches critical thinking skills that most people do not get with just life experiences. Sure our parents worked 3 jobs to support a family but who wants to do that when a college education is the key to everything. Like I always say, he say's he'll make sure that you will always have a roof over your head and food on the table......that could mean his moms roof and Kentucky Fried Chicken on the table............no thank you.

All I could think while I read this was "well, obviously." Money is a big deal, and not having it can lead to all kinds of stress on a relationship that I would think would make divorce more likely. Since being more educated generally leads to better job opportunities, it makes sense that less education would equal less money would equal more divorce.

I have a college degree, but I wouldn't call my self well off. Is my marriage going to fail or succeed? Tell me, University Study!

If you have $: you can't afford to leave. People are people, the difference in divorce rate does not mean those staying married are happy. It means they can afford to live separate lives that allow them to maintain their lifestyle and the facade of the "perfect life".

So people who don't go to college are irresponsible? Oh okay. Please tell my grandmother that she was being irresponsible by working to support her children rather than going into debt to get a college education. In regards to the article, most of my married friends are poor. Quite a lot of women I use to work with only got married because they got pregnant in the first place, regardless of education or money.
