A Do or a Don't: Primping in Public

A Do or a Don't: Primping in Public

Last night I was at a restaurant with some friends and a girl in our party whipped out her compact and started powdering her nose right there at the table!! While I am not one to reapply my make up throughout the day/night, I understand that some women are very particular about their appearance -- but at the dinner table?? I have my own opinion on this topic so what I want to know is, do you think it's a do or a don't to reapply your make up in public?

I personally don't mind someone briefly fixing their hair or wiping a smudge of mascara from under their eyes... or applying a little lipstick .... as long as it's brief and isn't a full on make-over do it... Personally I don't like putting on make-up in front of people because they tend to stare and that freaks me out... Oh and I make that weird open mouth face when putting on mascara....

My mom has this awful habit of taking out her comb anywhere and everywhere to fix her hair. Then she fluffs it. Then she takes out a mirror to apply her lip liner and a deep red lipstick. UUUUGH. It really bothers me. Me, I'll do the lip gloss thing wherever but sometimes I even feel self-conscious about applying at the table... I say please, no. This is why they give us nice big mirrors in the restrooms.

I did it in a train though, at the dinner table, I say that's vain.

I've done it myself and people watched me, lol. Whatever...I didn't really care. Well if someone wants to do it, that's cool with me, I'd be polite and not watch.

the only thing ill touch up in public is lip gloss, but apparently as long as the compact is cute you can powder as well, thiough i wouldnt

A big NO for me, you should always excuse yourself. Unless someone at the table points out you have something on your face, your make up it should stay on your bag during dinner.

Certain things should be done in the bathroom and some are acceptable in public like reapplying lipgloss. Hair brushing and styling is for the bathroom.

The Emily Post/etiquette types always say lipstick/gloss is okay at the table, but only if you can apply it without pulling out a mirror.

If it's lipgloss or chapstick that's fine. But if it's anything that involves using a mirror: lipstick, liner, eye shadow, mascara, etc I find it totally gross. It's one of my pet peeves when I see people on the bus or bart with their makeup bag on their lap doing all of the makeup!

that's just gross to see in public. Always do it in the restroom.

Only chapstick or gloss. If I saw someone brush their hair at a restaurant, I'd probably vomit.

I personally think that the bathroom is the place for makeup touchups, but I'd just like to share something interesting. In Adrienne Clarkson's autobiography (the former Governor General of Canada) she mentions that the Queen of England powders her nose at the dinner table. So it can't be THAT bad!

all the girls used to do it in class but i dont think i would do it now even tho it was last year, it is rude in public PUBLIC as in a resturant or work.

Lip gloss is fine; the rest? To the bathroom.

Personal grooming shouldn't be done in public. Period. I hate it when people do that at restaurants, or those girls who apply their make-up on the train to work. Totally tacky.

I think it's very tacky...I don't think that anyone with any amount of class will do it in public, personally.

I only reapply chapstick/lipgloss at the table. Anything else belongs in the bathroom.

I think it depends on what part of the meal it is.

I've never been one to primp at the table- I always excuse myself and go to the ladies room for such activities. But I have to say, several years ago I was shocked when my aunt whipped out her lipstick at the table and started putting it on, so when I went home I looked it up in some etiquette guides. Turns out putting on lipstick is acceptable at the table...for everything else you have to excuse yourself. I still don't like it though.

I have a friend who carries a mini brush in her purse and brushes her hair wherever we go- shopping, bar, on the street... its so annoying and tacky. Reapplying gloss is fine by me, otherwise, hit the bathroom to primp.

Ok so I say,if you most reapply your make-up while out someone, excuse yourself to the restroom for a few moments. But I wouldn't do it right there at the table.

Now touching up lipstick checking that you don't have food in you teeth (no matter what miss manners says) should be fine if you are with a group of friends and you just finished eating. now a business, or classy dinner no no no! now popping zits plucking eyebrows or doing a complete makeup over haul........that's too much quit worrying about your appearance no one cares as much as you do!
