Do Tell: How Would You Want a Therapist to Help You?

I happen to feel that everyone would benefit from seeing a therapist. Having an unbiased person to talk to about everything and anything can only help when dealing with everyday problems or deeper seeded issues. Of course it may take a while to find the right one, but once you do, you're all set! If money was no object, and you already found your perfect therapist, what would you want him or her to help you with? What would be the things you would want to discuss while sitting on his or her couch?

I'm in my Masters program to become a mental health/school counselor. In class, we have talked about how important it is for training counselors to seek therapy before treating others. If someone we are treating brings up an issue that we have not worked through ourselves, this can hinder our ability to help our clients. For me, I fear going to a therapist because I feel like they will look down upon me for seeking them out when I am going into the field, I just feel weird about it. It is suggested but I dont know anyone that actually goes through with it. My topic of choice would be learning how to cope with anxiety. I tend to get very overwhelmed and I can see how this could affect my ability to help others.

I have my husband gonig to a therapist to talk about his long untreated PTSD, I however would really like to go to get my sex issues resolved, i.e. wanting it all the time. I think as far as family goes we are ok but as a couple we need to get back to work since the birth of our kid kinda threw us for a loop

I've always wanted to be hypnotized to see if I'm hiding anything from myself. Who knows, maybe I'm not as deep as I think I am.

I've got a lot of inner child issues. That's what I really need to work out. It's effecting the way I mother my children. I'm going OVERBOARD with protecting them, providing for them, DOING for them. And I don't know how to stop because I'm afraid of the extreme opposite. But there is a lot more than that that has effected my adulthood. I'd love to talk to someone about all of it. Why I have become the person I am today and how can I be the best that I possibly can?

Oh, there are so many issues! I guess I would start with my procrastinating & using the SugarNetwork as a tool to procrastinate! :) Then, we could get into the heavy stuff. I do believe in therapy.

My best friend goes to therapy and she says it's made a huge difference in her life - she's able to talk out situations, deal with family issues, and just speak her mind in a way that she can't to most people. She loves it!

I'd have no problem going to a therapist. I like the idea of an objective third-party who won't just be a "yes" man. I'd want someone to help me deal with my fear of heights! Whip - you should try that! :) See what she does then. :)

NdHebert, therapists don't tell you that you have issues. They help you with the issues you want help with. I've never had a therapist say, "What's wrong with you is ______." Instead, they ask me to tell them what's wrong and then they offer advice on how to deal with it. Or they just listen.

I've been to two therapists to help me deal with depression. I haven't been crazy about either one. The first one gave me ridiculous advice that nobody in their right mind could follow. I like my current one much better except she mostly just sits there and listens to me ramble. It feels good and cathartic to vent to her, but sometimes I want to shake her and say "FIX ME, GODDAMNIT!" :rotfl:

I am such a happy and stable person. Why should I see a therapist to tell me I have issues? I think they are full of it.

Well, i went to a therapist for almost 13 years. Did he help me, sort of, i needed someone unbiased to talk to. Did he help my depression? not really. one hour a week wasnt enough to "cure" me. In the end I left because i figured out that its normal to have fluctuations in moods, that you have ups and downs and you HAVE to learn how to deal with them yourself.

I definitely wouldn't want a therapist who just listens and says oh that's okay and sends me on my merry way. I want a therapist who will challenge me to change so that I can become the best possible version of myself that I can be.

I'm reminded of the SATC episode where Carrie goes to Dr. 'G' and ends up sleeping with Jon Bon Jovi. I kinda feel how she felt about therapy... there's nothing that a therapist could give me that I couldn't get from , though....

What helps me the most is when someone analyzes my situation and helps me look at it from perspectives I didn't see or helps me look at where I am going wrong. I take constructive criticism pretty well, so this works for me. I know that noone can ever give me an answer to any problem, but if I am at a crossroads, then suggestions can always be helpful. The end path I take is always going to be own decision.
