Do Tell: What's the Best Way to Break Up With Someone?

Do Tell: What's the Best Way to Break Up With Someone?

Breaking up is hard to do, especially when you're the one doing it, so finding a way to let him down easy is a must. But is that even possible? Since you obviously cared about this person at one point, sparing him any embarrassment is crucial. At the same time, it's important to be firm, and make it clear that you no longer want to be in the relationship. I don't know the answer to this one, so do tell, what's the best way to break up with someone?

i know this is soo wrong but i've never broken up with anyone in person. in a lot of cases we were talking on the phone, got into a fight and i dumped them. some were also fights over AIM (*cringe*) two of my breakups were intentional, and i just called them up. they didn't exactly live near me so i didn't want to meet up, plus they were assholes anyway. i think the best policy is to get them to meet you out for coffee, and break up with them calmly.

A lot of talks about the problems in the relationship so that it doesn't come as a surprise to the other person. It's always the worst when it feels like it came out of nowhere.

if they won't accept it, you don't talk to them until they finally get it. any kind of contact is just a way for them to get their foot in the door. my ex wasn't upset until he found out i had a new boyfriend a few months later. then all the emotional "you don't love me anymore" messages, indirect spying on me by questioning MY friends about what new boyfriend was like, and the requests to "eat lunch and talk" came in a giant storm. i was so disgusted by his behavior i kind of blurted out a lot of not-nice things in a very cruel way and that was the end of it.

I'm horrible when it comes to breaking up. I know it sounds bad, but I usually end up text messaging.

Whoa, that's just wrong, cjmara805!I believe in being direct, to the point, and cutting it off quickly. Just like pulling a band aid off. Just go for it and be done with it.

Facebook. Just kidding, but that's how my boyfriend dumped me a few weeks ago.

Clarby..I know where you are coming from. Once I broke up with this guy because it just wasn't "happening" and he kept calling me and asking me "well what if we did this..." "what if I did things differnetly". You just have to be brutally honest, and tell them that they are a great person (if this is the case) but they are just not for you and stick by your guns!

What do you do when you try and make it short and sweet and they don't accept it?! I guess the simple answer is to hang up but I hate being rude? Is that the only way or should I hear any response from her even if it is my decision?

Throw up the deuces and walk away. I agree with the short and sweet thing and a looooooong time apart before talking again.

however you do it, make it short & sweet, don't go into TOO much detail & then don't contact them. make it a clean break.
