Do Tell: Your Best Summer Job

Summer is already half over, gasp, which means teenagers are most likely counting their hard earned cash made from their summer jobs. These days, summer jobs are not what they used to be. Some parents are pushing their kids to work in more corporate environments to prepare them for the "real world" versus scooping ice cream at the local diner or valet parking at the hot new restaurant. Regardless of your title, these kids are still learning key lessons of responsibility and becoming an adult. So, looking back ladies, do tell, what was your best summer job?

Fun and summer jobs were never in the same sentence for me. I either worked at Motherhood Maternity (i had a friend that was a manager) or Office Max and they both SUCKED. The pay was decent but I HATE RETAIL. Sorry to say it. It was good to get to work with my friend but i am so glad i work full time now doing what i love (politics) but never again will i go back to retail!!!!! It almost made me hate summer.

I spent a summer working for YDCC. (Youth Development Conservation Corp) At the time, I was ticked at my Mom for signing me up for it, but at the end of the 8 weeks, I was glad I did it. Spent the summer on the Olympic Peninsula of WA state, at a state park. We spent the summer clearing trails and maintaining the park structures. Aside from the bugs and the bees, it was a blast!! There were a total of 14 girls, and we lived together in a dorm-like setting with an older married couple as our "summer parents". We would go to the beach after work, or go hiking up in the hills on some of the trails we helped clear. On the weekends, we would take field trips, one time went up to Hurricane Ridge. So pretty!! I got to see a part of my home state that I probably wouldn't have ever seen, and I made money doing it!! YAY, money for school clothes!!!!

when i was 15 i worked for a local golf course. driving the picker, golf carts, cleaning and carrying around big crates of golf balls. It was a solo job so i listen to music on my mp3 player, plus it put me in great shape!

Easy! I was a Golden Girl at Disneyland in Cali. I stood out in front of a restaurant in a big yellow dress complete with parasol and white gloves. I waved and answered questions and took pics w/peeps. Great fun.

i used to waitress at a local restaurant in my college town during the summers so it was empty of all the annoyingly vapid preppies during that time. all that remained were the cool stoners and other misfits who didn't fit into my school's Southern-plantation mentality. It was so great to go out drinking at night after work and chill on the rooftop of the restaurant smokin hand-rolled "cigarettes." hehe...much fun!

I absolutely loved the summer that I worked at a video game retail store. I was the only girl, which was very trying at times, but the atmosphere was always so fun-filled and so relaxed, and my co-workers were fun loving gamers, like myself!

i think one of the jobs i did this summer is my favorite so far: i got to babysit this kid a couple days a week.. he's eleven and doesn't really need a sitter but his family is the kind that would rather buy him a new playstation rather than have a conversation with him. we basically spent our days hanging out and discussing everything from sex to music to politics. i actually think i was a good outside influence on him since the things he hears from his older brothers aren't always exactly correct, imo (for instance: "i know nazis are bad. but fascists are ok, right? my brother says he's a fascist because he's angry." or "you're jewish right? why did the jews kill jesus? are you like really evil?") it was very gratifying to see this little man form his own opinions after i answered his questions. i really feel like i helped him in figuring out who he's going to grow up to be. :)

My best summer job was working at the movie theater. I got to hang out in air conditioning all day. Talk and goof off with my friends and see all the summer blockbusters as many times as I wanted to for free. The pay was awful, but more than fair for the actual amount of work the job required!

My best summer job was when I quit working at a bar on June 20th. I moved to the beach, didnt work, and spent everyday tanning. It was fabulous!

i did web design FROMHOME! and conveniently my home that summer was a mile from the Lake Michigan shore!! So I woke up at 10, went to the beach to read. Went home for lunch, worked for the afternoon, went back to the shore to watch the sunset, then worked a few hours in the evening. it was glorious.

It was nice reading those two :-) For me the job acually is along the lines of my current career path/goal/dream, but I know I couldn't work in the music industry for a living because I'd probably be living on the street (seriously!) But I did grassroots online marketing for a start-up company that did marketing for artists, particularly well known hip-hop artists.

I was a nanny for quite a few years and it was my favorite job, summer or regular. I babysat for two boys that I came to call "my boys" because they were just too much fun. It taught me so much about myself, children, family, parenthood, and life in general. The mom and I were super close, so I learned a lot from her about relationships (she left an abusive man) and being a young woman in the world. It could be draining at times-I was on duty from 6-6 Monday through Friday-but I always wanted to go back on Sunday night. I still miss spending time with the boys and working with kids in general.

In high school, my summer jobs were working at the movie theater, and working at Abercrombie and Fitch. I don't know which was worse. I worked at A&F long before the store ever got cool (this was in So Cal, so it took a while for the brand to get popular out there). So no one came into the store. But according to the management, we had to look busy, so they made us go arrange hangers to be exactly 1/2 inch apart, refold shirts etc. It was the most annoying job ever. The movie theater was probably more fun since we got to see tons of free movies. Cleaning the theaters were gross though. As a result, I never leave any trash in theaters now, knowing what it's like to clean it up!

My best summer job was a few years ago. I got hired to do photoshop work for a store that sells drafting stuff, outdoor equipment, camping supplies, sells/rents construction equipment, and does copies and edits architectural designs for the firms. They had me photoshop some signs for them on holidays, and the rest of the time I was just either copying stuff, doing deliveries, or playing games on the computer. My boss was awesome and used to buy us milkshakes, ice cream, and Popsicles all the time.
