Energy Imperialism? Is the Georgian Conflict All About Oil?

Click to Read

Energy Imperialism? Is the Georgian Conflict All About Oil? Could the Kremlin's latest bid for energy dominance boomerang and finally wake up the West? The prevailing wisdom says Russia's military incursion into Georgia was really all about "energy imperialism." The Kremlin doesn't like any challenges to its energy hegemony, which Georgia's part of the BTC pipeline clearly represents. And Russia's strong response, the thinking goes, basically ends any Western hopes of getting other Central Asian countries to stand up to Moscow with pipeline projects of their own.

I think this is less about oil and more about having political leverage against Europe. If Russia has it's hand on the valve, no one is going to talk tough about their other activities.

Isn't every war in some way related to oil? During WWII, Hitler invaded Russia to get their oil fields, because he couldn't continue to wage his war with the rest of Europe without it. Disclaimer I understand that Hitler didn't attack only for the oil, as he was just a madman. His advisors strongly suggested that he go for those areas first, and pointed out the obvious advantages to having the enemies oil reserves and production capability.

On NPR tonight, I heard and interview with a woman who had been in South Ossetia when she said ethnic Georgians lead the Georgian army through the town burning homes and firing rockets. She said that her family fled into Russia and she said they nearly died several times. This might not be an accurate account, but at the same time this perspective needs to be heard .

"We have to deny Russian strategic objectives, which are clearly to undermine Georgia's democracy, to use its military capability to damage and in some cases destroy Georgian infrastructure and to try and weaken the Georgian state," Condaleeza Rice today We're still trying to sell it as a Cold War, David and Goliath thing and after Iraq, that could do more to hurt Georgia and the pipeline than to help.

" The prevailing wisdom says Russia's military incursion into Georgia was really all about "energy imperialism." How can you make assements about what it was "really about" with out mentioning that Georgia made the first military move?

What does it mean wake up the West? We poured money into that pipeline. Are we willing to risk another, more dangerous, war to control it?
