Facts About Ovarian Cysts

Last weekend, in the Dear Sugar Needs Your Help post called Sex Hurts! What Can I Do?, a few of the comments mentioned that her pain could be caused by ovarian cysts.

While it's true that a cyst could be the cause of pain during or after sex, I don't want anyone thinking they have an ovarian cyst just because sex hurts. As with any concerns or ailments, seeing a doctor is the best approach.

It is good to know about ovarian cysts and their symptoms, so take this quiz and see what you know.

I had an ovarian cyst. Lost my right ovary to it. For years I'd been telling doctors about all these problems I had, all they ever did was stick me on the pill. No pelvic exam, no ultrasound, no blood test. Nothing. It wasn't until I demanded a referral to a gyno that my doctor said, well, you have to have all these tests first. Turned out I had a cyst bigger than an egg on my right ovary. The surgery also found a small cyst on my left ovary. If the doctors had listened to me earlier I might have kept my right ovary. I'm on the pill to suppress the cyst on my left ovary. Moral of the story, if you know something is wrong, ask your doctor to do the tests. They don't always know best.

I knew this girl in high school who had an ovarian cyst and it exploded while she was driving to work. She ended up having a hysterectomy at the age of 16

I had a friend who had chronic cysts on her ovaries. She'd have ruptures about twice a year. One cyst was so big that the rupture twisted her ovary. She was in a wheelchair for 2 months and couldn't take her final exams until she got better.

Yay! I aced that! My cousin had ovarian cysts removed when she was 18, one being the size of a softball. She's only 22, and can never have children now, because the cysts kept coming back, and she had to have one of her ovaries removed.

I have a history of ovarian cysts, the largest one rupturing and being the size of an orange, so I would've been a little surprised if I hadn't gotten them all right.

Ovarian cysts are no big deal as long as they are functional cysts. These form during every menstrual cycle and go away on their own. However, if you suspect that you have a cysts I would advise you to see your gyno and have an ultrasound done. I had a dermoid cyst in my left ovary and it had to be removed. It became extremely painful because I let it go for so long. Bad idea.

I actually responded to that post and I mentioned "interstitial cystits" which is not ovarian cysts, but rather a bladder condition. I just wanted to clarify that.

I have had severe ovarian cysts since i was 16. Birth control has helped alot. Every couple years I have to change the type since my body seems to adapt. The sonogram isnt horrible. The internal sonogram is really uncomfterble
