"Faggot Is a Man Who Beats Woman" Chilean Domestic Violence Ad

Chilean Government Makes Homophobic Anti-Domestic Violence Ad

Nobody's going to have a problem with a PSA to end domestic violence unless it encourages a whole other type of violence, but that's exactly what the ad below did. Created by the Chilean government to address violence against women, the slogan literally means "faggot is a man who beats a woman."

Maybe it doesn't sound so bad in Spanish, I thought? But the word "maricón" has become a widely used homophobic slur in Spanish-speaking countries. So much that the Chilean advocacy group Soy Hombre Soy Mujer fears it will add to the already pervasive homophobia in Chile, where statistics show a nearly 600 percent increase in violence toward the LGBT community in recent years.

Worst of all? The country's 33 rescued miners, the national heroes, are all strutting around in tees with the slogan, compliments of Chile's minister of the National Women's Service.

My husband is Chilean and he said he wouldn't have associated that word with gays. Maybe it's degrading in some other Latin American countries, but hardly anyone would be offended by that in Chile. I just checked their most popular newspaper's site (emol.com) and it hasn't made the news there.

The fact that it means something else in Spanish is no excuse for writing faggot in English. Really? Those campaigns have a lot of people involved, and it goes through a lot of hands. This wasn't some intern using Google translate and someone ought to have said something. Especially considering the nature of the ad, they should have chosen something that was without a doubt not going to have any other meanings.

"maricon" is the equivalent of faggot in spanish. it's a slur intended to describe a gay person in a negative way. maybe in south america it's not used that way but in mexico, central america, and latinos in the us (at least in the southwest), it is. "cobarde" would have been a better term to use for the purposes of this ad campaign and it's also the literal translation of coward.

I don't interpret that as meaning homosexual. They're talking about jerks who beat their wives / girlfriends.
