First Date Backup Plans

Do You Have a First Date Backup Plan?

From asking the right questions to ensuring the night doesn't dry out, we know just about all the first-date dos and don'ts. But sometimes the best-laid dates go all wrong.

My friend asked me to show up at a bar where she was chugging through a first date this weekend. With reluctant daters scheduling mid-date texts and phone calls, she's hardly the first person to map her exit out. In fact, the tactic is so popular it's a wonder anyone gets away with it! But the point isn't to be believed but to escape semi-gracefully, so I suppose it works.

What about you? Do you plan an escape route before the night begins?

My English teacher junior year told all us girls to have back up plans for dates. Turns out she walked out on a man over dinner cause "he was annoying." They wound up getting married.

I just don't get it. Why would you go out on a date if you think it is going to go badly?

I had a friend who lied about her friend giving birth in order to get out of a date. She had the guy drop her off at the hospital and called another friend to come pick her up. I've never needed an escape plan, but some people do I guess.

I've never had a date go so badly I wanted to walk away - maybe people should be a little more picky before going out.

No, but I have had to call a friend to pick me up when my date got too drunk to drive me home. I just told him a friend had an emergency and was coming to get me.

Yeah, why would you accept a date if you know it's going to go badly? If that's the case, just say no!

I never have, but I never went on any dates that I anticipated would go badly, either. I haven't been on tons of dates with guys I don't know well (usually I'll know them if we go out, or I'll begin dating a guy without having to do the awkward first date thing), and for my past 2 serious bf's (including my current love), I've had real first dates but I was super excited about them and knew they would be great, so no need for a bail-out. If I'm not excited, I'm not going to go...that's my philosophy.
