375 Reasons Why Being a '90s Girl Rocked Our Jellies Off

Flashback: Lame Jello Ad from the 60's

Flashback: Lame Jello Ad from the 60's

And when I say "lame" I mean "racist." The premise of this commercial is that a poor rittle Chinese baby tries to eat her "laspberry" Jerro with her chopsticks, and can't, of course, so she needs to be introduced to the more advanced Western spoon. Or maybe the point of the ad is to make fun of Asian people speaking English as a second language. The 60s and 70s were not great times for Asian-Americans on television. Check this out, too. (This makes me long for the intelligence of commercials featuring Paris Hilton eating a burger while washing a car...)

Ugh — it's interesting to see what people used to find funny. It's like Breakfast at Tiffany's. I like the novella but can't love the movie—despite Audrey Hepburn—because of Mickey Rooney's racist caricature of Mr. Yunioshi. I can appreciate seeing this ad, because it makes me think about what we think is funny today. I'm sure that, 40 years from now, people will find certain things totally unfunny and inappropriate. It reminds me of what Faulkner once said: "The past is never dead. It's not even past."

some people are so sensitive. i'm an asian american and i didn't find this commercial offensive to me particularly. you have to keep in mind the time period in which it was made. i'm sure if it were made in today's pc world, you'd see all sorts of people and screaming racism.

I have no idea what 7bits means, pintsized, but I can tell you why this is posted in GiggleSugar. As Martin Luther King once said, "Sunlight is the best disinfectant," and some things are so dumb they're funny. I tried to convey that the sentiment was laughable, not Asians themselves...Hopefully, "funny" can mean more than falling down humor and penis jokes, not that I'll stop featuring that genre any time soon...
