Front Page: Federal Bailout Lacks Oversight

    • Although $290 billion of the $700 billion allocated to the bailout program has been dispersed, Congress has taken no action to fill the independent oversight posts established to prevent corruption and waste. — Washington Post
    • Germany has already entered a recession, according to the latest data, which also shows that most industrialized countries are facing a major slowdown. — New York Times
    • The Austrian man accused of keeping his daughter in his basement for 24 years and forcing her to father his children has been charged with murdering one of their children. — CCN
    • MSNBC retracted its story about Sarah Palin that proved to be a hoax. MSNBC reported an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing Fox News story that Palin did not know Africa was a continent. The man who came forward was not in fact the source. — AP

i think that everyone had these grand ideas on what to do with the bailout and things always look good in theory or on paper, but when it comes to taking action, there's always a bit more complication than expected right? wow - it's a shame that what's happening here affects the entire world and that Germany is now on a downward spiral.. that guy in austria is finally being forced to deal with what he did and i think that it's about time. i really feel for that family and i hope that the right outcome prevails i hate to say it but if you look back through all my comments on here, i did say that some of the stuff that was being said about palin was just far fetched and not true - and i'm glad that someone's owning up to their lie. palin may not have been everyone's favorite but i think that it was a bit over the top for people to 'go at her' in the manner that they did.

I use winkies and smilies a lot to convey that, but I'm sure the tone still gets lost half the time :(

diadem- Ugh. That statement perfectly demonstrates why a lot of conservatives have disowned him.

Bush just said the bailout doesn't undermine the free market system, so it must be right! Right?

I was under the impression that the partial nationalization of banks implied socialism. I had to set the record straight.

not sure what your post has to do with this organic? no one on this thread said anything about socialism. Thats a whole other argument and I think we shouldn't get into that...

Fortunately, government bailouts aren't socialist, because Obama supports them (and he's not a socialist).

Hainan-I remember reading that as well. Here's a link that might do it:philanthropy.com/free/articles/v19/i04/04001101.htmI'm quite down about the bailout, but was happy to read that the credit card industry isn't getting any love. That made me feel slightly better... until I read that Obama is pushing to bailout GM. Oh well.

well, I am speaking of what the republican party stand for... which is a small federal government, leaving a majority of the decision making to the states... one thing many people don't know is that the early leaders of America struggled with whether it was constitutional to even create a federal bank/reserve. Republican party wants a true interpretation of the constitution, then this federal bailout is unconstitutional. Maybe I should find a lawyer and sue the federal government... I just feel like the last 8 years has been bad on the republican party as well and what we truly stand for. I don't think many people know that much about what the republican party stands for. They feel we are greedy and selfish, when in reality we are the more charitable people of the 2 parties (if you want the article I got that info from, you will have to ask and give me a while to find it in my cluttered mess here) and we just don't feel the federal government has the right to spend our tax dollars on charity. We should have the right to dictate who we give charity to as we feel again the constitution does not give the federal government that much power.
