Gawkers Go to Gay District Sparking Resident Concerns

Some tourists treat San Francisco's gay population as a tourist attraction. Residents of the historic gay Castro District have reported an increase in large tour buses, which drop off thousands of nervous visitors ready to snap photos of two men holding hands or point and stare in shock.

While Castro dwellers and merchants welcome visitors and their cash with open arms, they have little tolerance for the new breed of non-shoppers. And things might not get better — now that Hollywood has used Castro Street as the set for the upcoming movie Milk, a film about the first gay councilman in the US who was killed by his fellow San Francisco councilman, I imagine that the city's gay neighborhood will attract even more gawkers after the film's release.

Positive curiosity might signal the end of a gay-stigma, and I don't blame residents for feeling like animals in a zoo. If San Francisco wants to base much of its economy on tourism, should it swallow the consequences?

Seriously though I know what you mean of course small towns are different and I can see where you're coming from. But you have to put your self in the tourist’s shoes a lot of them come from cultures where homosexuality is where it was here in the early 20th century very much in the closet and not discussed. Although it's still a struggle for some here it is a main stream culture now.

Back in my day, I would have to agree. Not anymore, as I've gotten a rare and horrible disease called furnituritis. That is, my chest has fallen into my drawers. ;)

"How often do you get to see to men sticking their tongues down each other’s throats right in front of you" In my neighborhood, pretty much every time I leave the apartment :) It doesn't shock me (four years in West Hollywood before moving down here will sort of get one used to the sight), but I can see how people who don't have that regular exposure to lots of openly gay people might. But I don't think pointing and taking pictures is particularly polite way to respond to it.

errr - I just noticed my typo. Sorry. Since I am currently living in a small town, I don't see much, if any pda's. So I'll also have to concede that flamboyance is not news to the mainstream in larger cities. It would be here, but I also realize the here isn't SF. That's what I'm basing my opinion on, that most of these tourists aren't from major cities.

*two men...

Well I'm certainly not going to argue what your experience has been because your exp. is your exp. However, in regards to the article I have to side with reason and believe that people would be in shock (as the article suggest they are) at seeing two men kiss and express PDA before their very eyes. I seriously doubt that people would be in shock at seeing a man in a flamboyant costume before their very eyes because the costume (factor) is a non-issue it’s main stream. There are men in costume gay or straight in many different aspects of celebration and entertainment in our society and it has been this way for decades, so why on earth would that be such a shock to see in person? Yes I agree you can see men kissing on the internet silly boy, but you’re missing the point. How often do you get to see to men sticking their tongues down each other’s throats right in front of you (X) a few thousand.

"Do you really think that the person who dresses up in drag or what not for a parade or festival for the purpose of being a bit of an exhibitionist is going to be irritated that their photo is being taken?" It has been my experience that the people who go out of their way to look as ridiculous (or individualistic) as possible also seem to think that their appearance should be considered normal, and not photoworthy. Given that, yes I believe that they would get upset. "The tourists don't want photos of people in costumes they can get that anywhere. They want to see two men holding hands, kissing and showing PDA. That's what they're coming to see." I don't think so. I can google over 6 million sites for pictures of PDA's with homosexuals. So that is everywhere also.
