For a Good Time Call Interview

For a Good Time, Call . . . Stars on Phone Sex and Roommate Horror Stories

In select theaters today, For a Good Time, Call . . . stars Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller as two roommates who run a phone sex line. We recently chatted with Lauren — who also cowrote the screenplay — and Ari about their sweet and sexy flick, which is actually based loosely on cowriter Katie Anne Naylon's real-life experiences as a phone sex operator in college! (Check out our interview with Katie here.) Lauren and Ari shared their own roommate horror stories, how they researched the business of phone sex, and what it was like to be a part of this new wave of raunchy female comedies. Plus, Lauren dished on the effect this sexy role had on her relationship with hubby Seth Rogen, who has a cameo in the film. Watch our interview now!

Ari would call me every night before bed and ask me what I was wearing. What are you wearing tonight? And usually it was nothing. But the noise I woke up to was. But it was kissing, you guys. Hi, I'm Tara Black and I am here with Ari Graynor and Lauren Ann Miller from the new movie For A Good Time Call. Hi guys. Hi. 1-900. That's 1-900-MMM-HMMM. How exactly did you research being a phone sex operator? I know that Katie had some experiences so. Yeah we just tried to talk dirty to each other as much as possible. Ari would call me every night before bed and ask what I was wearing. What are you wearing tonight? And usually it was nothing. And then I would describe what that was like. and then I'd ask her how that felt. No we didn't. It's so boring. We didn't know. The movie while it does play on Katie, my co-writer . Her real life experiences of running a phone sex line out of her dorm room at Florida State, 186-FSU ticks. The movie is not a phone sex documentary. The goal was not to turn people on in a sexual way, but only in a funny way. Yeah. It was like trying to find that balance between keeping it real enough that it obviously has sexual element to it. But always having it be funny and not overtly sexy. When your characters first move in together, it's kind of a nightmare. and I'm just wondering, do you have any real life roommate horror stories. I mean, I feel like everyone has this story really but freshman year of college, my first semester roommate. She one night did the thing where she brought a guy back to our room. I was sleeping, and I woke up to, "I hate this noise." This is so confusing, what the noise with the noise I woke up to was. But it was kissing you guys. Wait what does kissing sound like? It was kissing. It was kissing. I think, I don't know. I'll be honest, I didn't open my eyes, but. That is not the sound of kissing, that is like. Well, I don't know. But most of the movie is based on you and Katie being roommates. Yeah it is based me and Katie being roommates. Kaite and I have an interesting dynamic and that we are very different people and that I'm a little more straight and narrow and follow the rules and Katie is a little more exuberant and breaks the rules. And so we really wanted to explore that universe that girls are very different and but can still be best friends. It is my dream job and I'm perfect for it. Really, okay, well you go get your fancypants boring job and I'll just be here being exciting. I was wondering how do you feel about being a part of this sort of new wave raunchy comedies that are geared toward women. I think it's exciting just that more and more movies are starting to come out that are not just like big blockbusters for guys. But I think it's less of like that we're part of a raunchy movement. And it's just like this is but how women are. I mean we say all the time we're super excited that there is a movement about it, but we wish there didn't need to be. You know, it's definitely one of those things and it's just like we like movies like this. We like movies about ourselves and when you can you see yourself in a character. And that's what we tried to do here. And it's great that that's happening all around now in movies. And it's exciting. Now that Seth has done Zack and Miri Make a Porno and now, you've done a movie about phone sex lines. Has this spiced up your relationship? I mean. Well, they have made three-ways. We have a real interesting household. And you know and Ari being our only third at this point. No big deal. I'm kind of a huge deal. That she knows of. But, I think what happens on screen unfortunately may not mimic exactly what happens in real life. I'm not saying we're not an old, boring, married couple but We're kind of an old, boring, married couple. No, I mean, I hope we have a little fun in there. That's it, that's all I'm going to say because I'm a lady. He's a friend, he's a girl, and I like it. You know, I was wondering. I thought the friendship was great, and that, you know, really the heart of the story, and how did you guys kinda create that really natural, realistic sort of portrayal of what girlfriends are really like? Like I touched on a moment ago, Katy and I are very different people. And, you know, I'm very, like I said, this sort of, girl who follows the rules. When we met in college he called me Earth Girl because I wanted to start a recycling program. She was wearing a Dave Matthews t-shirt. It was 2001 and I still love Dave. I do. And, you know, I think that's something that girls can really relate to. You know, we always say that girls hate each other for no reason. And you never know who's going to end up being your best friend, and I think it's amazing how, for me personally, like I know in my relationships, all my friends are so different from me because and that makes me, I hope that affects my life in a positive way and I feel like it does. And that's what we attempted to put into the story. You kind of talked about it a little bit, but I felt like there was a sort of message of women should be sexually liberated, that, you know it's important to see in films and can you talk a little bit about that? Yeah, I mean, first of all it's not an issue film. We're sort of like, you know, and I think it's a really, we wanted tell this really fun story and I think one of the great parts of the story that I certainly love when I read it was that we shouldn't feel shameful about sex. You know, violence in this culture is like, so vastly more accepted than women being sexual and and I think also we show that it's connected to intimacy and emotions. We're not advocating running around with your legs flying open and But I.. Got that image now. Oh good. But especially that through your friendships you learn how to get in touch with yourself, and a lot of that is, is being confident in who you are sexually. I feel like you said that so well, I don't know. Thanks Barbara Walters. Oh, you're welcome. And back to you. Be sure to check out "For a Good Time, Call" when in comes out in select theaters August 31st and then opens nationwide.
