Handle This: Your Boyfriend Owes You Money

Things have finally come to a head in your rather tumultuous relationship with your boyfriend, and you’ve finally gotten the courage to pull the plug. The only problem is that he still owes you the $2,000 that you loaned him over six months ago. You now realize that loaning him anything was a rather stupid move, but you really want to get your money back.

He’s completely irresponsible, which is half the reason why you’re ending things with him to begin with, so you know it's not going to be as simple as just asking him nicely. You need that money to pay your credit card bill so how would you handle this?

ha! My ex owed me $1200 and I took his ass on Judge Judy! Seriously.. The way the show works is they fly you out to L.A. (you AND A FRIEND so you can party while you're there) and they fly him out too. The pay for your hotel and the day of your case, they may offer a compensation the day of shooting (I got $300). I won my case, they made my ex look like a complete ass haha .. and the SHOW pays you, not the ex. Because my ex was a broke ass I didn't have to worry about getting paid from him because the show sent me a check. It was awesome and funny and they are playing re-runs of it now lol. My name is Jennifer and his name is Gil.. look it up.. it's hilarious. You should do it! Go to the website and fill out the form

Something similar happened to me - my ex and I had a shared credit card and he ran up a lot of debt with it, but I was the primary cardholder so the debt was in my name when we broke up. I pretty much did what SilentVamp said - he agreed to a payment schedule, and when he fell behind, I got some advice from a lawyer, considered taking him to small claims court - I told him I had a lawyer and kept on him and that basically did the trick, he paid me back eventually.

This is why you never loan a boyfriend money...you never know what's going to happen with them and this is a prime example.Honestly if you know he's irresponsible then you know deep down you're probably just going to be out the 2k...

since the money is already lent- i honestly would approach the money issue first before the break up issue. i had lent money to my best friend at the time to pay her half of the rent so we wouldn't get evicted, and then we "broke up" as friends. needless to say getting that money back was hell. i finally did but only cause i was a real bitch about it and her brother was my friend too and her brother told her mom. but anyways, i'd approach him as a gf still and instead of nagging, first try the tactic of how much you need the money. how he'd be totally helping you out by starting to pay you back cause you really need him to. blah blah blah. if that doesn't work, then i'd find a friend who is a lawyer to write a legal sounding letter- he doesn't need to know that it prob won't stand up in court! and then i'd dump his ass. you may need to ocunt your losses, but its worth another month with him if you can recollect some of it.

That money's as good as gone. It's an expensive lesson, so make sure you've learned from it!

LMAO. i don't loan mutha-f*ckas that kind of money without a contract anyways.i might be a b*tch, but i'm not STUPID!!!my brother owes me $3,500 (he needed it to move into his place). he looked at me crazy when i gave him a contract to sign.either he pay me back in full at the designated time (i woulda gave him 6 months, but he claimed he could pay me back in 3) without interest, or he can pay me back in payments with interest.needless to say he's paying me back in payments with interest. he knows i don't fool around with my money.so if i do this to my brother (who despite his special needs, i love dearly), what you think i would do to some guy i'm screwin'???

I vote try his parents too! Often that will snap him back to reality. Unless they're total scum they should put heavy pressure on him to pay you back. The fact that he knows someone else knows and is expecting him to pay it back holds him a bit more accountable. That said, I'd never, ever loan a boyfriend that much money!

I have to agree with other posters and say chalk it up to experiance and get the heck out. Chances are he wont pay you back anyway, with him being such an irresponsible jerk.....and just dont do it again

I had a friend that this actually happen to, her bf's car broke down and she paid for it with the terms he would pay her back. He never did, so it started to get dirty. She went to her friend which was a lawyer, they wrote him a nice/nasty note. He must have been scared after the wrote the letter, he paid her within two weeks.

Good luck collecting on that. Moving on and starting fresh is better than staying with someone you can't stand.@Kristinh1012 LMAO at "I paid 20,000 to never have to talk to my In-laws again. It was SO worth it."

Try to set up a repayment schedule with him. If he agrees to the repayment schedule, get it in writing. Then, if he reneges on your agreement, go to small claims court. Voila, you've got proof that he knew it was a loan that requires repayment (NOT a gift) and you should be good to go. But if you do go to court and lose, it's relatively inexpensive - worth the shot.

I would do what gooselicious said. Call his mommy. Some guys act all tough but when you get their parents involved they turn into a 5 year old boy again. If the phone call to his parents didn't work then I'd take him to court. If all else failed, goodbye money.

cubadog is right. He can claim that this is a gift OR he just says that it's YOU who made all those purchases. Unless you have a promissory note, or that he's paid the monthly dues from the last 6 months, you MAY BE out of gas, girl. I like watching those court shows and it's interesting that sometimes the 'loan' may turn out to be 'gifts' depending on how 'convincing' the argument from the plaintiffs or if there's some sort of hard proof (promissory notes, voice mail message, or him paying the monthly dues from HIS account) to confirm that it's a loan.Thank goodness this is only a 'what if' case :p unfortunately many women have to go to small-claims courts thanks to their generosity.Never loan or let anyone buy from your credit card without a promissory note. Believe me. I've been in that position w/ my ex and he never pays a dime. (the statutory time limit has expired and still until today I don't know where he's located)
