Holiday Stress

What Stresses You Out About the Holidays?

Between planning an unforgettable Thanksgiving menu and making sure we don't gobble away healthy eating priorities, anxiety can overwhelm excitement for the upcoming long weekend. Once Thursday comes, nosy questions about our personal or professional lives will make us squirm, while some of us will do our best to impress potential in-laws. If you're meeting the parents, check out this list of what they're looking for and don't forget to bring a gift! And when limited time or money means you can't make it home for Thanksgiving you're bound to feel bummed, even if you're missing the possible drama.

Of course, once Thanksgiving's over, it's time to shop and plan for Christmas! The song says it's the most wonderful time of the year, but what about the holidays makes you lose sleep during long Winter nights?

I should mention that birthdays are just as important as far as christmas goes for us, and that im still hemming and hawing about how whether im going to stay at home or go to my parents house for christmas. I just love the big family celebration, but its a hassle to drive several hours with tons of presents and haul them all back home in my small sedan.

I love this season and I try to let most everything negative roll off my back. What bothers me is my family and their complete unwillingness to come to my house for any holidays or my kids birthdays. My house is close to the same size, seating is the same, and the lighting is better for holiday photos. I have scheduled things at my house and always end up canceling them and throwing something together at my parents house, and it really bothers me. I told them this year no ifs ands or buts, I'm doing my daughters birthday here, whether its at the house or out somewhere, I haven't decided yet, and I'm willing to bet that as time comes down to it they are all going to cancel or start trying to talk me into having it up there. I'm not planning on giving in, and it could mean its just my husband and I, and our kids, and Im trying not to be bitter about that.

Nothing. I don't go out of my way to celebrate. Which just makes me a grinch.

My in-laws. My husband's family is all close by and huge and they have events throughout the whole month of December. We say no to some, but the stress of having to say no and deal with their attitudes when we say no is almost as bad as the stress of going. Plus now that we have a child they try to make us feel guilty if they don't get to see her. My husband's family is a lot like the family in My Big Fat Greek Wedding where they are always getting together and always in each other's business. My family is the opposite, and even after 6 years of dealing with my husband's family, it's still too much for me during the holidays.

My mom and my aunt, with their heavy drinking, intensely personal questions, focus on commercialism and presents, and propensity to let my daughter get away with murder. My daughter, because she is three years old. I feel the pressure to create an enjoyable holiday experience for her, and on top of that, I absolutely must teach her good manners while all the holiday hubbub is going on. Money. My Christmas budget is $100. Not $100 per person, $100 total. My brothers and ex-husband get this, and my daughter will be spoiled rotten from all sides, but I hope Mom and Aunt don't mind too much. Two extended families, though this stress has been resolved. I am not going to shuttle my daughter all around town so both my family and her dad's family can see her. She will be with me on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, and with Dad and his family on Christmas Day. Hooray, no more spending all day in a hurry.
