How Long Do You Wait to Become Facebook Friends?

It's never too soon to be Facebook friends with us, but real life can be more awkward. Some people will add you the day you meet, and that's fine if it's an acquaintance. But when it's someone you're dating or think you're dating or would like to date, things become complicated fast.

A new study (yes, 500 million friends warrant a movie and a study), revealed people consider sharing Facebook info more personal than exchanging numbers. How long should we wait to "friend" a courtier? Respondents say anywhere between three dates and three months.

It makes sense to add with caution, considering how hard it is to cut an ex out of your digital life. Once you're friends, you're stuck in each others' feeds until one of you hides or de-friends the other.

Sure, there's now a nicer way to reject requests, but how long do you wait?

I think I'm the only 18 year old in the universe who doesn't have a facebook account. I really like it like this though, I much rather let people into my life one by one, letting them to get to know me at my pace, rather then them just being introduced to my life & suddenly knowing everything.

I usually wait a day or two, unless they add me first.

I would have no problem adding them right away. I was facebook friends with my current boyfriend before we started going out. (We knew each other in high school but never really talked until recently when we were brought together by mutual friends). If anything's complicated, it's knowing how long to wait before accepting or sending a relationship request!

I'm with MissSushi. Who are we kidding? Googling and/or Facebooking someone right away is pretty common and I'm sure we're all guilty of it. And, like GirlJen, there are plenty of people I

I say wait as long as you can. There's nothing more awkward than having to unfriend someone.

Chances are people facebook you as soon as they know your last name anyway, so unless your profile is completely private, you might as well just add them. I usually add people I hit it off with fairly quick - within a few hours of talking. I play a mmorpg, and sometimes my hubby and I get with a good group of people and we usually add them.

When I first meet someone (coworker, date, friend of a friend who might become a friend of mine), I request to add them. I have plenty of facebook friends who I don't call or text, and don't see Facebook as more personal than a phone number.

I read something recently (I thought it was on here) that suggested waiting a little while. I had never considered the reasoning until I read the article, but I completely agreed! Wait until the person has a good understanding of who you are. Seeing pictures and updates can give someone a skewed impression of who you are. I'd rather let them form a real opinion of me rather than establishing one from viewing my profile.

This isn't an issue for me since I am in a long term relationship, but I wouldn't have problem adding a person right away.

Seriously, this is a real issue? I'm so glad I don't have to date.
