The Last Decade in Less Than Seven Minutes

Believe it or not, we're about to start a new decade in less than two months. That means we can all get ready for the barrage of recaps about the last 10 years, which have truly seen a lot of strange and sad events. This has been a decade dominated by terrorism, wars, Terri Schiavo, Hurricane Katrina, and gay marriage bans. But we've also witnessed the rise of YouTube, the Rick Roll, the iPod, Michael Phelps, and Barack Obama. Gearing up for the end of the year, Newsweek put together a seven-minute roundup of this decade's most memorable moments. I'm sure VH1 is taking notes for the inevitable upcoming show called something like "I Love the 2000s." What will we call this decade, anyway?

I think a lot of people forget that 9/11 happened this decade and I think it's by far one of the biggest stories of our time!

"Actually, decade means 10 years, so this decade ends on the very last day of 2009... 2000-2009 is 10 years, meaning the first day of 2010 will be the start a new decade. Saying that it doesn't start till 2011 would be like saying that 1980 was part of the 70s or that the year 2000 was the last year of the 1900s... " Actually, no. You have to go back to year 1 to get it. There was no year 0. So the first ten years, 1-10, was the first decade. And so on and so forth. Just like how the 21st Century did NOT start until 2001. Calling the '70s the '70s is just a way to refer to those years. New decades/centuries/millenia start after the previous one is complete. The time span isn't complete until the 10th/100th/1000th year is over.

There's already an "I Love the 00s" (or something like that). It aired in summer 2008.

LOL, anon. It's been an interesting few years. I still got choked up at the Kennedy portion, especially with the captioning of "universal healthcare eludes him."
