Lines For Evacuation Buses Grow in New Orleans Lines of people waiting for buses to take them out of the city grew longer Saturday and traffic grew heavier on main highways as Hurricane Gustav strengthened into a dangerous storm on track for the Gulf Coast. The city had yet to call for a mandatory evacuation, but began ushering out the sick, elderly and those without their own transportation on Saturday. The state has a $7 million contract for more than 700 buses to carry an estimated 30,000 people to shelters.

It's nice to see the local government is doing something, since it is there job to actually protect their people.

I'm with Rac. The federal government is the best way to deal with local disasters. Fortunately, the federal government is an expert in "managing" matters "efficiently." And government bureauocracy is known for its expediency, I think we'd agree. If we can't look our benevolent federal government, then who will save us?

If only there were some federally run "agency" that large, populated areas could call in emergencies. This "agency", would then "manage" the crisis so that people wouldn't die in their houses, gasping for air as the rising water drowned them. If such an agency existed I'll bet that would be useful.

I am so glad their asinine mayor is doing it right this time. Instead of just having a huge parking lot full of buses.
