Media Research Center Picks Worst Media Offense of the Year

For the 21st year in a row, the Media Research Center has rounded up Notable Quotables. The conservative media watchdog group typically chronicles the perceived liberal media bias. This year, winners were selected for categories such as: The Obamagasm Award, Pummeling Palin Award, Obamalot Award, and Pay Up Patriots Award.

Here's who won the Quote of the Year Award:

  • The Winner: Chris Matthews during primary coverage in February “I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My — I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often."
  • Runner-up: A postelection headline from Reuters “Media bias largely unseen in US presidential race”
  • Runner-up: Bill Maher on the mother of Trig Palin “I’m not that convinced that that’s her baby. . . . The daughter — who we know is fertile because she’s knocked up again, or maybe for the first time . . . she did like take a five-month leave from high school because she had [uses fingers to indicate quote marks] ‘mononucleosis’ right around the time the baby was being born. And the mother, the so-called, you know, okay, maybe it is the mother, but, you know, she was back to work three days later. You don’t smell something?...It’s not like they’re not willing to lie about everything else.”
  • Runner-up: ABC's Sam Champion teasing a segment on Good Morning America “Could global warming one day force us into space to live?”
    • Do you find these quotes to be among the worst of reporting of 2008? I might have added the "terrorist fist jab" moment to the list!

I agree with Jillness about the whole Maher thing; putting Bill Maher on this list for making fun of Sarah Palin is like Tucker Carlson telling John Stewart that he was too easy on John Kerry.

fox being a conservative news station doesnt mean that the "terrorist fist jab" comment wasnt one of the most stupid, inane comments ever made. its right up there with the tingle up chris matthews leg. and the media is only biased to whatever the next bandwagon topic is. lets not forget the whole "george bush is the guy we want to have a beer with"

"It seems to be that if you're not far left, you must be conservative."Which seems to be the only way to defend the claim that the country and even Obama are now center-right.

Yes, there is no doubt that there was media bias and there has been media bias for sometime. Honestly it's gotten to the point where if your body language doesn't suggest your excited about a democrat that those who deliver the news with out bias are referred to as conservatives, if you don't seem excited that your reporting about say Barrack Obama than somethings wrong. The bias is so strong that the scale for measuring it has been shifted to one side, now that's bias.

"About the Wall Street Journal, their editorial page is arguably conservative, but the rest of the paper is obviously left biased."Are you kidding? Have you read it recently? Murdoch owns it, and I have read articles where he discusses his renovations to put more of his political slant on the front page. The changes have been very distinct this year. Rupert's view on politics has taken over the front section. I don't consider the "number of negative stories" done on candidates to be a reflection of what is biased or not. Rather, it is about the QUALITY of stories. Were those negative stories deserved and about something legitimate, or were they making a big deal over something silly? I am sorry, but a source that doesn't bat an eye at being a platform for people who make up stories about "terrorist fist jabs", preachers who say Obama is "unpure because of his jezzabelle mother", authors whose books have been roundly proven factually void, is NOT a station that is "equal" or "moderate".

The AP is conservative?!?! Seroiusly?!?! I mean, you're joking right??I think we may need to go over what the term "conservative" means. It seems to be that if you're not far left, you must be conservative. Since over 70% of news outlets are lefty (there was a study done that proved that) it seems like we're so de-sensitized that anything thats not to the left is thus deemed "conservative". There are MANY shades of grey. The Pew Research group found that Fox News was the only network to feature exactly the same number of negative stories on both candidates, yet they are "conservative". I'm sorry, but wouldn't that be called equal or moderate??

As a liberal, I enjoy the WSJ. It's not that unbalanced, and it presents its positions well imo.

I also hated the media who were misogynistic in their Hillary reporting. (Chris Matthews, guilty as charged.)

I'm not sure where this "the media is not left" push is coming from, but it's certainly wrong. I suppose next stephley's going to pop in and inform us that the NYT is dead center.

:rotfl:Right, Fox News is the underdog!!! Very funny! Also, there are MANY conservative publications, so it isn't as if that view point isn't being pushed hard by many sources. The entire MSM does NOT lean to the left...that is just what some sources would have you believe. And lets not forget that formerly moderate sources like the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press have come under conservative ownership, and their product has drastically changed. To include Bill Maher is just absurd. He isn't a journalist, he is a comedian.

It's a conservative watchdog group that points out the main Stream media's liberal bias. 1 station versus how many others???? Why would they point out the underdog when they have sooooooo many other stations to point out. Everyone knows that fox leans to the right. But it's about making sure everyone else realizes that the entire MSM leans to the left. Citizen- why would you even bring that up?
