News to Me: Paid Time Off While You Break It Off?

Breakups can often be debilitating, and while it's easy to tell our friends that we don't feel like going out, it's a lot more difficult to get out of going to work, even if your breakup does feel a lot like having the flu. But now, a Japanese marketing firm called Hime & Company is offering "heartbreak leave" for its employees going through difficult breakups. According to Reuters:

Staff aged 24 years or younger can take one day off per year, while those between 25 and 29 can take two days off and those older can take three days off, the company said.

While I don't think this company's idea will be very catching, I do like that it acknowledges the bigger mental health issues we all deal with. So what do you all think? Is this is a neat concept or a little over the top?

this is yet another example of how japanese organizations take a genuine interest in the human beings that support their existence. I rarely miss work because of illness, but I've missed a lot due to really bad fights with partners and so on. Its a lot easier to work with a stuffed up nose than it is to design a proposal while worrying if the cat is going to be missing when you get home because your pissed off boyfriend got home early to let it out to get back at you for spending the 20$ bill some football linebacker autographed the week before.

This is wonderful. When my boyfriend and I started dating, we had a traumatizing break-up at the beginning, and going to work was horrible. I was in a terrible mood, bursting into tears every ten minutes, and basically on my phone the entire day. Not only did my co-workers suffer, but so did my productivity. I actually felt guilty accepting pay to be a mess!

I work for a major telephone company and they are really big about their employees "personal developement". we get 40 hours a year of unscheduled paid time off (or personal time.) plus 11 hours every month of scheduled paid time off (and it goes up with every year you've worked for the company) We also have great benefits and they will pay for you to go to school. (like...all of it) They also just built a new concert arena here in town, and employees that work here at the headquarters get first dibs (at discount prices) for all concerts that come to our venue. Not only that but we get free cell phone service, we get to wear jeans everyday, and we have regular food days, where management will bring in breakfast, or pizza or something. My point is..there are ALOT of things companies can do to boost moral without singling people out.

I actually think it would be better to go to work, to keep your mind off of things and keep busy.

I think it's a nice idea that companies show care about employees' emotional well-being but it doesn't sound very practical... what about people who are in volatile relationships? I don't think it's fair for them to take more days off because their relationships are less stable. Or people who lie about the relationship problems to get days off? It's not unlike people who lie about being sick to get a day off. Maybe companies should just allow more personal days in general instead of labeling it a "heartbreak day"

I think this is a good move by the company to ensure their employees' emotional well-being. Workers need to be mentally and emotionally stable to do their jobs well. After a breakup, some may feel stressed or overwhelmed about everything that they have to deal with...or they may not want to deal with anything at all. Being able to take a day off to get back on their feet can make a huge difference. I do agree though, that maybe they should have just added on another personal day.

Japanese companies are known for their investment in their employees' mental and emotional health and well-being. This isn't surprising to me at all, though I suppose it does invite a bit of culture shock into a discussion.

I think it is smart actually for companies to offer leave for emotional well-being. When you are emotionally drained and depressed it CAN affect your work and it can be incredibly difficult. I would not necessarily call this "heartbreak leave" but it should fall under "personal day" because it is embarrassing to have to tell your boss you need a day off because you were dumped!!The point is - we need more personal days for employees. Side note- a lot of companies are trying to support families and relationships. Friends with boyfriends in finance mention that companies offer dinners and events for couples and families for their employees that work long hours. If you don't treat your employees like humans you risk losing the best workers.

agree with those saying it's kind of absurd to take a *heartbreak day*. We call them PERSONAL DAYS at my job. I don't think I've ever stayed home from work due to a breakup. work helps me forget!

WHere i work we get one "personal holiday" day per year, to take whenever we want no questions asked.

I think it is silly - everyone gets sick days and vacation days, and that should be sufficient. I would never want to announce to payroll and HR that I was on 'heartbreak leave'.

i agree with you, aimeeb. sometimes being in a high pressure environment can cause you to break, regardless of your relationship status, and then add getting dumped on top of it, holy cow! it's happened to me before and i was sent home from work, it would've been nice if i could've just called in sick . . .

I like this idea. I think if you've been in a serious relationship and things come to an end, a day or two off amidst it all could really help.

It's a better idea to actually go to work.. because what will happen when you're at home is far worse.. you'll just be thinking about the guy.. work will keep you busy!

Who cares what it's called. Maybe they can add those days and allow them to turn them in as personal days so they don't have to share the info... the point is, corporations are becoming more "emotionally intelligent". And that does a working soul good. I used to work for a company that would give you shit if a family member died. "Well... they weren't in your IMMEDIATE FAMILY were they?" So, it's refreshing to see that there are bosses out there who give a damn about your emotional well-being. Some might say we're turning into a society of pansies. I say, isn't it about time we give one another a freaking break?

allou, i agree but at the same time calling in to say "can i use a vacation day?" can make you feel worse. since it's not a vacation at all. however, you have to read the article to see that the company also offers paid mornings, twice a year, to go shopping (to get the best bargains) so it's a pretty female-dominated company to begin with. as an aside, this was posted on another Sugar page, i've never seen a double posting - is this something I should get used to? I can see it as quickly becoming annoying.

Im probably the only one but I think its stupid. If you work for a company that gives you paid time off then you usually get so many days for "personal" days anyway. I mean..I wouldnt want to go up to my boss annd be like "yeah..Im gonna need to use that heartbreak leave today" I would just feel like a dumbass. Id rather just tell them that Im using a personal day...those are for whatever you want them for.. if they do this..then where does it stop? Are they going to give people a "my dog ran away last night" day?
